The United Way: It's a wrap

Furman closed out the 2003 United Way campaign November 12 with a record $75,018.62 raised. Forty-eight percent of university employees contributed to this year's fundraising drive.

In 2002, 28 percent of Furman employees contributed $46,718 to the United Way of Greenville County .

During an end-of-campaign celebration luncheon, the Furman United Way Campaign Cabinet recognized the Department of Development with a “Most Creative” award. Judy Wilson, director of Parent Programs, spearheaded fundraising in this department, which reached a 100 percent participation level. Development used a hot dog lunch, personal testimonials and a friendly competition with Admissions to boost giving.

The English Department, which contributed more than any other university department, was given the “Best Academic Department Campaign” award.

The October Jail-A-thon generated $1,600, and raffle ticket sales netted close to $900. Community Relations Director Michelle Shain served as the coordinator for the 2003 Furman United Way campaign. Faculty and staff recently completed 134 surveys designed to gauge opinion of this year's fundraising drive.

Shain says feedback from the surveys will be used to make improvement to next year's campaign

During a November 11 United Way luncheon hosted by the Palmetto Expo Center , Furman was recognized for its increased employee participation and overall improvement. The Greenville County campaign raised $11.8 million.
