The Furman Web

Outside of their affiliation with Furman, what do Pat Pecoy (modern languages and literatures), Kevin Treu (computer science), Richard Stanford (economics and business administration) and Lloyd Benson (history) have in common?

They maintain the most popular faculty home pages on campus.

Pecoy's site, the most visited, is academic in nature with numerous course and language resource links. Treu's is second in popularity and is more personal. It includes a touching chronological tour of the Treus' 1997 trip to Siberia to adopt their son, Benjamin. Stanford's page contains links to course syllabi, self-authored commentary and many other economics-related resources. He has published three books and many essays on-line. Featuring links to dozens of history-related sites and original research on Greenville's past, Benson's "past connections" home page is sure to interest any history buff.

The home pages of Laura Thompson (biology) and Chris Blackwell (classics) are also very popular, according to statistics compiled by Jake Breeden, Web development director. Breeden, who monitors Web usage, has compiled some other interesting facts about the Web:

o The Furman Web network consists of more than 5,000 individual pages.

o The average number of user sessions each day is about 6,500. A user session is defined as any visit to the site.

o More than 90 percent of those surfing the Furman Web are from the United States. The next most-active countries visiting the site include the United Kingdom, France, Canada, Australia, Germany, Switzerland, The Netherlands and Brazil.

o The most popular Internet service providers for off-campus visitors are (in descending order) America Online, Mindspring, Cable Modem, BellSouth and AT&T.

o The feature that draws the most comments is the on-line student video, which is viewed an average of 1,250 times a month. o On average, 22 Furman digital postcards are sent each day.

o John Snyder (biology) maintains the world's largest on-line collection of moths and butterflies on the Furman Web.
