Vick receives Order of the Palmetto

Bingham Vick, Jr., the director of the Furman Singers and a member of the Furman music faculty since 1970, has been awarded the state of South Carolina's highest civilian honor.

Vick, who also serves as conductor of the Greenville Chorale, received the Order of the Palmetto following the Chorale's concert October 21. The award is given by the governor's office in recognition of "distinguished service to the State of South Carolina, not only through public service but also through civic leadership."

Former Furman president John E. Johns, representing South Carolina Gov. Jim Hodges and Sen. Verne Smith, presented the award. Vick is the coordinator of choral ensembles at Furman and teaches voice, choral conducting and choral literature.

Under his direction, the Furman Singers have achieved a national and international reputation for excellence in choral music. In addition to his work at Furman, Vick has served as the artistic director and conductor of the 150-voice Greenville Chorale and the professional Chorale Chamber Ensemble since 1981.

He has also been the musical director at Westminster Presbyterian Church for more than 25 years. Vick is a graduate of Stetson University, and holds M.M. and Ph.D. degrees from Northwestern University.
