Harris honored with the Chiles-Harrill Award
Master Sergeant Paul E. Harris. was honored April 12 as the recipient of the Chiles-Harrill Award. The honor is presented annually to a faculty or staff member who has made substantial contributions to students' lives.
A native of Tuscon, Arizona, Harris joined Furman's ROTC program in 1998. He is the primary military skills instructor for the freshman and sophomore students enrolled in ROTC courses.
An active participant and advisor with Furman's Office of Multicultural Affairs, Harris has been the impetus of ROTCs participation in the Campbell Youth Leader's program since its inception.
"Paul is almost always the first member of the staff to report to work before 5:30 a.m. each morning so he can be sure the cadets are prepared to conduct physical training. He pushes students 20 years his junior to their limits on physical training while inspiring them by his example," says Major David Jewell of Military Science. "Paul is the steward of our study hall program which keeps him working until after 9 p.m. each night with cadets who need to improve their academic performance.
"Beyond that, he has been a stellar mentor to all of our cadets. The personal level of commitment and absolutely selfless way in which he devotes his time, expertise, and genuine compassion to these young men and women has been nothing short of heroic."
The award, established in 1998, is named in honor of Marguerite Chiles and Ernest Harrill. Chiles joined the university's staff in 1942 as director of student personnel; she retired in 1980 as vice president for student affairs. Harrill, a longtime member of the political science department, also served as dean of students for many years.
Harris joins Carol Daniels, Betty Alverson and Lib Nanney as a recipients of the prestigious award.
