Daniels honored with Chiles-Harrill Award

Carol Daniels, student services coordinator, was honored April 12 as the recipient of the Chiles-Harrill Award. The honor is presented annually to a faculty or staff member who has made substantial contributions to students’ lives.

A junior college graduate of Spartanburg Methodist College, Daniels joined Furman in 1972 as a secretary. Four years later she began taking night classes and graduated in 1982. The next year, Daniels was named to her current position.

Daniels coordinates Orientation, a weeklong program that introduces freshmen to life at the university. She also acts as an advisor to student publications, coordinates the University Disciplinary Committee and advises campus sororities and fraternities.

"Carol is someone who deeply cares about student welfare and integrates this concern into the many different programs for which she is responsible," says Harry Shucker, vice president for student services.

The award, established in 1998, is named in honor of Marguerite Chiles and Ernest Harrill. Chiles joined the university’s staff in 1942 as director of student personnel; she retired in 1980 as vice president for student affairs. Harrill, a longtime member of the political science department, also served as dean of students for many years. Daniels joins Betty Alverson and Lib Nanney as recipients of the award.
