Pro-Am a hit With the help of a sold-out field and excellent weather, the Furman Pro-Am enjoyed yet another highly successful day May 1, raising $110,000 for the universitys golf programs. A popular event in Greenville, the 19th annual Pro-Am featured 128 amateurs and 32 Ladies Professional Golf Association players. Furman alumnae Beth Daniel and Betsy King were joined by fellow LPGA Hall-of-Famer Joanne Carner in the field, which included a large contingent of Furmans golfing alumnae. King and Daniel founded the Pro-Am in 1982. Conducted by the Paladin Club, the tournament supports the Furman golf program. This year marked the fourth year that Belk has sponsored the event, says tournament director Marshall Bettendorf. Belk also involved some of its vendors in the tournament. About 100 companies supported the Pro-Am through sponsorships, prizes and other contributions. More than 100 volunteers students, faculty and staff helped to make the event a success, says Bettendorf. They worked concession stands, served as cart drivers and drove shuttle buses.

As corporate partner with GSO, Furman employees receive a 50 percent discount on GSO season tickets. Tickets for the same six Masterwork concerts, performed at the Peace Center for the Performing Arts, are priced between $288 and $202 (or $144 and $101 for Furman employees) depending on seating. This discount is not extended to the less expensive Sunday concerts at Furman. Top honors Furmans student recruitment publications have been recognized by three professional organizations as being among the very best in the nation. The universitys viewbook, which is mailed to high school students, has been awarded the "Best of Show" in the Admissions Advertising Awards sponsored by the Admissions Marketing Report, a publication distributed nationally to admissions and marketing personnel in higher education. It was also awarded the Silver Wing in the Mercury Awards competition sponsored by the South Carolina Public Relations Society of America. Furman student recruitment publications have also been awarded the gold medal in the 2000 CASE International Circle of Excellence Awards. Albion College (Albion, Mich.) and Vassar College (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) were the only other colleges to receive the gold medal. The Furman admissions package includes the viewbook, campus map, a tip brochure for high school juniors on how to choose a college, and fact sheets on academic departments. Y2Community update The Y2Community committee met May 3 and agreed to organize a summer ice cream social and university picnic on the mall. The ice cream social, first held last summer, was met with rave reviews. Organizers for this summers event will follow a similar format: free ice cream and entertainment behind the dining hall. The committee also decided to schedule a university picnic on the mall for the fall. The picnic will probably be held sometime in mid-October. More information about these two events will be published in upcoming issues of Inside Furman and posted on the Furman Y2Community homepage, which is linked to the faculty/staff page.
