Community events to continue in 2001
Rafting trips, baseball gatherings, picnics, karyoke machines, socials, festivals and forums - all were part of the Year of Community at Furman.

During a time of frenetic schedules, office relocations and rapid change, the gatherings were a welcome respite from the busy workday. They gave us an opportunity to catch up, meet new employees, relax and mingle with students.

The activities, funded through a Presidential Leadership Grant from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, were so well-received and attended that the university will provide funding for several of them again in 2001-2002.

Although no date has been set, a university-wide picnic, similar to the "Furman Fall Festival" last October, will likely be held again in the fall. The Ice Cream Social, an August gathering held the past two years behind the dining hall, will also continue.

The university will also fund free beverages at the Tower Café for one day next winter term. The staff forum, which gave staff an opportunity to ask questions and voice concerns to President Shi and university vice presidents, will also continue in some form.

What's new on the Web
Chris Blackwell, professor of Greek, has posted an array of excellent photographs and video footage taken during the winter term Mediterranean Study Abroad.

Blackwell and John Shelley (religion) accompanied 33 students on the trip. The site includes some stunning photographs and footage of the Vatican and famous Greek architecture. There are also some candid and humorous photographs of students. Check it out at http://www.furman.edu/~cblack01/abroad/Index.htm

Nominations sought for special awards
Nominations are being accepted for the Chiles-Harrill Award and the Alester G. Furman, Jr., and Janie Earle Furman Award for Meritorious Advising.
