Night baseball coming to Furman

Furman's baseball stadium, which in 1956 became the first athletic facility to open on the new campus, will soon be the home of night baseball.

The first evening baseball game is scheduled for Friday, April 13, when the Paladins take on the University of North Carolina-Greensboro. The first pitch will be thrown out at 7 p.m.

Baseball coach Ron Smith coordinated a fund-raising effort that raised more than $200,000 to pay for the lights, which are scheduled to be completed later this month.

The eight light structures include two along each foul line and four in the outfield. There will be 158 total lamps producing 1,500 watts of power each. The field's lighting will meet the standards for AA and AAA baseball.

Traditionally Furman games have been held during the afternoons, often during classes. The night games are expected to boost student support. They will also give the team more flexibility in scheduling games.

So far this season, two games have been suspended due to darkness. In all, the Paladins have nine home night games on their 2001 schedule, including a Wednesday, May 9, regular season finale against Clemson.
