Now you can’t spell PAC without AC

It’s true.

Air conditioning is being installed in the Physical Activities Center — or at least in part of it.

Yes, cool air will be blasting into the PAC’s fitness room this summer. The gym, men’s and women’s locker rooms and swimming pool will remain without air conditioning.

The stifling heat in the PAC, which can climb to 100 degrees during the hottest part of the year, is a popular topic among staff and faculty during the summer. At times the excessive heat has forced building staff to suspend exercise activities.

The air-conditioning system is being installed in conjunction with construction of the B.K. Bryan Center for Military Studies on the east side of the building. The addition will house two large classrooms, a conference room/military science library, offices and a reception area. In addition, a portion of the PAC basement is being renovated to house a supply room and cadet study space area.

ROTC is currently located in the basement of the library but will relocate to the PAC this spring. A dedication ceremony for the Bryan Center is tentatively scheduled for May 23.

Portions of the fitness center will remain closed throughout March to make room for workers who are installing the air conditioning.

In addition, workers are putting the final touches on a free-standing Human Performance Lab that is located at the rear of the PAC. This 2,400-square-foot lab will be equipped with machines that will measure body fat and blood chemicals. A motor analysis machine that measures body movement will also be housed in the center.

The Human Performance Lab is currently located in the basement of the PAC but will be relocated to the new center later this spring.
