A Y2Community update

With raves about the Y2Community luncheon still in the air, 10 Furman volunteers will coordinate other "community-building" activities throughout the year.

More than 2,000 Furman faculty, staff and students attended the university-wide luncheon February 1, with approximately 50 signing up to help coordinate activities in one of six areas.

Below is a list of activities and their coordinators. If you have an idea for an activity, please call one of them.

• Discuss, learn and be entertained (Linda Julian and LilliAnn Hall): Books, current events and campus news are all fodder for this group, which will offer you the chance to hear different perspectives on a variety of issues from faculty, staff and students. Join Furman groups for outings to events at Timmons Arena, the Bi-Lo Center, the Peace Center, and other areas of interest.

• Volunteer in schools (Steve Richardson and Denise Crockett): The public schools offer opportunities for tutoring, shadow days, becoming a homework buddy, providing school supplies, or helping with a clean-up project.

• Work with senior citizens (a coordinator from the FULIR program will be appointed): There are opportunities through nursing homes, retirement centers and the FULIR program to interact with, work with and learn from the elderly.

• Volunteer in the community (Bruce Brown, Scott Derrick): Greenville community agencies need volunteers to participate in their programs. Furman’s participation strengthens the university’s ties to the community. Programs include United Way, Urban League, Hands-On Greenville Day, Make a Difference Day, Habitat for Humanity, March of Dimes, etc.

• Get involved in athletics (Owen McFadden and John Roberts): Fans, weekend warriors and athletes can participate in such activities as intramural sports teams, rafting trips, tailgate parties at athletic events, special trip to Falcons or Braves games, Furman Olympic Games, and others.

• Campus events (Susan Zeiger and Gayle Warth): We’ll create our own events to encourage interaction and sharing of ideas. Opportunities include picnics, talent shows, luncheons, ice cream socials, holiday events, movies and department open houses.
