Summer construction
update
Center for Collaborative Learning and Communication In May, workers began renovating the basement of the library (formerly occupied by Military Science) to make room for the new Center for Collaborative Learning and Communication (CCLC). The renovation represents the first phase of a comprehensive plan to expand and renovate the James B. Duke Library. The CCLC is scheduled for completion for the fall term. Central Plant Construction on the new central piping plant will begin this fall. Once completed, cooling systems throughout campus will be controlled from this facility. Furman has purchased the major equipment for the plant and is reviewing the mechanical designs. Construction on the piping system connecting the central plant to the buildings on campus has begun. The initial phase will be concentrated in the main gate area and the main mall. During construction, traffic will be detoured around work areas. As work proceeds, other areas such as Milford Mall, sections of the library circle, and South Housing loop will be closed to allow for the installation of underground piping. Estridge Commons The North Village facility, which opened last summer, is being renovated to accommodate the University Housing administrative offices. The conference room and computer lab will remain, but the under-utilized convenience store is being removed to provide much needed office space. This renovation is scheduled to be completed next month. Herman N. Hipp Hall Work continues on the design of Hipp Hall. Construction documents will be available for bidding in the fall of this year. The building is scheduled to open for winter term 2002. Housing renovations This summer, Poteat and Ramsay residence halls are closed for refurbishing. In addition to the routine replacement of carpet and repainting, heating and air conditioning systems, doors and windows are being replaced. The residence halls will be ready for occupancy this fall. Human Performance Laboratory This facility, located behind the Physical Activities Center, is essentially complete except for landscaping. Stop in and visit with Ray Moss of health and exercise science for a tour of this facility. North Field lighting This project will provide lighting for the north intramural fields and was largely funded by the class of 1995. Installation of the lighting system will begin later this summer. Plyler Hall New exterior doors have been installed. The exterior limestone and covered walk are being cleaned and treated with a water repellent. Carpet will be installed in and around Townes auditorium and walk-off matting will be placed at all entrances. All work is scheduled to be complete before fall term begins. Pepsi Stadium Both the field and dugout construction on the new softball field are nearing completion. A subsurface sand and fabric drainage system has been included to improve playing conditions, especially for the early spring games. Student Services Suite Renovations to the University Center are under way to provide permanent space for the Vice President for Student Services and his staff. When completed later this year, the reconfigured space, formerly the CESC conference room, will provide a much more functional space for Student Services. Work on the space will continue through the summer. |
