Hicken named S.C.
band director of year
Leslie W. Hicken has been named Band Director of the Year by the South Carolina chapter of Phi Beta Mu, an international fraternity of band directors. It was an especially significant honor for Hicken since Phi Beta Mus South Carolina chapter consists largely of high school band directors. There are only eight college band directors in South Carolina. Hicken has served as Furmans director of bands since he joined the faculty in 1993. His responsibilities include conducting the Wind Ensemble, Symphonic Band, Marching Band and Basketball Band, and teaching instrumental conducting and music education. Before coming to Furman, he was director of bands at Youngstown State University. Whats new on the Web Music Department Web Site The music department worked with the Department of Marketing and Public Relations to develop the page, which also features a calendar of music events. International Studies A section on international students and alumni is designed as an outreach tool for alumni and prospective students living abroad. Furman student Darren Grem developed the site with input from Bill Lavery of International Studies. Both pages can be accessed through the Furman Web site (www.furman.edu).
Randolph named ARAMARK Southeast Manager of the Year David Randolph, director of dining services, has been named 1999-2000 Southeast Director of the Year by ARAMARK. He received the award during the companys regional meeting June 7-9 in Biloxi, Miss. There are more than 80 ARAMARK managers in the Southeast. Randolph was recognized for his efforts in customer service, employee promotions, food quality, cleanliness and meeting financial goals. In addition to his duties at Furman, Randolph also oversees ARAMARK operations at North Greenville College and the South Carolina Governors School for the Arts and Humanities.
Children needed for psychology study If you have small children, the psychology department needs your help. As part of a study on early cognitive development, psychology professor Sophia Pierroutsakos and summer research students are in need of children from newborn to five years of age to participate in a variety of games and to be observed by researchers. The age-appropriate exercises are designed to be fun for children and interesting for parents. They take 10 to 30 minutes to complete. The researchers are especially in need of children from seven to nine months and from 18 months to three years.
