On
a weekend filled with nostalgia, great stories and a stadium dedication,
the Furman men's team defeated the FROG (Furman Rugby Olde Guys) 45-20 October
11, but the entire program was victorious. Approximately 30 rugby alumni
returned to campus to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the team and to
dedicate the Furman Rugby Stadium.
Furman Coach John Roberts, former team Captain Greg Dover '05, FROG president
Dr. Scott Taylor '01 and Furman rugby parents Tom Mullinax and Arnold Mooney
spoke during a 30-minute stadium dedication on Homecoming morning. Mooney
also announced to the crowd that efforts were underway to have the field
named "John Roberts Pitch" in honor of Roberts who has coached
Furman men for nine of the squad's ten years.
During the past 10 years the men's rugby team has evolved into one of the
very best small college team in the country. The squad has captured three
national championships and has finished runner up twice The men have amassed
an overall club record of 116-37-1 while the women are 47-44-1.
