Furman football - it's not just pigskin anymore
With 17 starters returning from a club that finished 9-4 and captured a share of the Southern Conference title, the Furman football team is projected to finish among the top 10 in almost every NCAA Division I-AA preseason poll.
But if a fantastic team and seven home games aren't enough to get you excited about Furman football, there's plenty more.
Chuck Hussion, who joined Furman as director of athletic sales and marketing this year, has scheduled many activities that are expected to bolster community interest in Furman football. Hussion, known as the "Voice of the Paladins," has been the play-by-play announcer for the Furman basketball and football teams since 1994.
The home schedule and special events:
September 2, Elon, 7 p.m. Furman will salute the United Way of Greenville County at this game. Two thousand complimentary tickets will be given away to individuals served by United Way-funded charities. Through group sales another 3,000 tickets will be sold for $7 each. The university will donate $3.50 from each of these tickets sold to the United Way, which will kick off its 2000 campaign September 7. A fireworks show will follow the game.
September 9, Newberry, 7 p.m. Furman will welcome seven high school bands, which will perform during halftime festivities. More than 3,000 children are expected to attend the game as part of the Tobacco Free Coalition. Interactive games and rides for children will be available before the game, and a fireworks show will follow.
September 16, William & Mary, 7 p.m. The university will pay tribute to Furman's athletic scholarship donors during "Paladin Club Day." Former soccer standout Scott Broderick '88 of Greenville, football All-American Allen Edwards '93 of Spartanburg and basketball great Mel Daniel '82 of Saluda are among seven athletes who will be inducted into the Athletic Hall of Fame in ceremonies prior to the game. Others to be inducted are Caroline Peek Blaylock '95 (women's golf), Jack Kay '86 (men's golf) and Brent Williams '91 (baseball). A fireworks show will follow the game.
September 30, Western Carolina, 2 p.m. Furman will honor Greenville County educators during "Education Day." Public school educators will receive discount tickets and the Greenville County Teacher of the Year will be honored at halftime. Also at halftime, a spectator will have an opportunity to win a free truck if he/she can toss a Frisbee through two open windows on the vehicle from a distance of 40 yards.
October 14, The Citadel, 2 p.m. A high attendance is assured for Family Weekend at Furman. At halftime, a spectator will have an opportunity to spend a minute in a money machine - a clear Plexiglas booth with floating bills and coupons. One of the bills, if recovered, can be redeemed for $10,000.
November 4, Georgia Southern, 2 p.m. Eight members of the U.S. Golden Eagle Jump Team will parachute into Paladin Stadium before the kickoff of what is expected to be a pivotal Southern Conference match-up. And it's Homecoming, too.
November 18, UT-Chattanooga, 2 p.m. More than 3,000 participants in the Royal Ambassadors and Girls in Action, Baptist youth groups, will attend this game. Larue, a Christian rock band, will perform during in a post-game concert.
