It's here: FUnet

by John Roberts

At Furman we receive and communicate campus-related news through several outlets.

Students typically rely on The Paladin as their primary source for university news. Inside Furman contains news items and features that appeal more to faculty and staff.

There are other communications outlets as well: public announcements, the Furman home page and the community bulletin board.

Launched this month, FUnet is designed to be Furman's one-stop on-line shop for university news and announcements. It has been developed over the past year with input from Furman's Web Advisory Group. With help from student writers and photographers, we hope to post several new stories and photos each week.

The site includes announcements, a university calendar, the dining hall menu for the day, current weather conditions and links to on-line news stories featuring Furman. We encourage you to bookmark FUnet or make it your default home page. You may also link to FUnet from the Furman home page.

A few things you should know about FUnet:

• In the fall, FUnet will become the default home page for on-campus computers. So there will two sites: an internal one (FUnet) and an external one ( www.furman.edu ). This enables us to tailor our messages and to communicate more effectively.

• To logout of FUnet, or to view the external site, simply use the logout link at the top of the page. In the fall, FUnet will be visible only from on campus. For those wanting to access the page from off campus we will have a log-in function.

• Uuntil the start of the new academic year, we plan to tinker with FUnet. It is an evolving site, a work in progress. So we want input. What do you like? What do you dislike? By the end of the summer, we hope to have a more polished site. If you have any feedback or story ideas for FUnet, please e-mail me.

• Most importantly, FUnet is not meant to supplant Inside Furman (the faculty/staff newsletter) or The Paladin . FUnet simply packages our on-line campus communications and news into what we hope is a readable, attractive format.
