Bowling for a cause
The Paladin Club will be sponsoring a Bowl-a-Thon fund-raiser on Saturday, February 17, beginning at 11 a.m. Those already committed to bowl include Furman student-athletes, student groups and staff members.
The Paladin Club hopes to raise one full scholarship. Come out for a fun, free time of bowling! Sign up now and begin collecting your pledges. For more information, call the Paladin Club and speak with Tracy Towle at 294-3593.
Medical, school supplies needed
The Center for International Education is sponsoring a drive to collect medical and school supplies for their service learning project in Kingston and Tower Isle, Jamaica, February 23 to March 4.
The schools and host institutions where the students will be working are in great need of the following items: Band Aids, construction paper, glue, first aid cream, Neosporin, aspirin, nail clippers, tissue, cough syrup, cold medicines, tape, pens, pencils, markers, chalk, children's books, note pads, crayons, small scissors, glue sticks and rulers.
If you would like to contribute any of these items, please bring them to the Center for International Education in Johns Hall 112 and place in the drop box in front of the counter! The items will be collected until February 21.
For more information, call Karen Noren at 294-3092.
A call for volunteers
The Furman Pro-Am will celebrate its 20th anniversary May 14. The "captain's choice" tournament, which regularly attracts some of the top names in the LPGA, will feature a kid's clinic conducted by the Furman men's and women's golf teams.
This year, a Champions Cup, named for Connie and Bill Timmons will be unveiled at the pre-tournament breakfast to be held at the Timmons' home.
Betsy King and fellow Furman alumna and LPGA star Beth Daniel founded the pro-am in 1982. Conducted by the Paladin Club, last year's tournament raised $110,000 for the university's golf programs and scholarships.
More than 100 volunteers - students, faculty and staff - help to make the event a success each year. They work the concession stands, serve as cart drivers and drive shuttle buses.
If you are interested in volunteering for the pro-am, call Marshall Bettendorf at 294-3435.
Furman wins state recycling award
The South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control has named the Furman Recycling program as the best campus recycling program in the state for 2000.
Phil Lewis, custodial supervisor and recycling program coordinator, accepted the award January 30 during an awards ceremony in Columbia.
More than 250 university and DHEC personnel attended the luncheon. Furman's efforts to promote recycling through education and awareness were cited by the awards committee.
Each year, Furman distributes refrigerator magnets and brochures to students stressing the importance of recycling. The university also maintains a recycling web page and promotes environmentally friendly initiatives through Earth Day activities.
