New look for an old building

One of the first things you may notice when returning from the Christmas break is the different look of the administration building.

With most employees on vacation (and out of the way), workers with Triangle Construction will spend almost all of the holiday season demolishing interior partitions on the ground floor and replacing outdated mechanical systems throughout the 43-year- old building as part of a renovation project to make room for the Admissions and Financial Aid departments and a new 2,600-square-foot Welcome Center.

The new center, to be located adjacent to the administration building in the old visitor’s parking lot, will house a reception area for all campus visitors. In addition, the building will have a viewing area where prospective students and parents can attend presentations.

The center will be connected to the administration building by a hallway. The north porch will be enclosed and the building’s entrance will be shifted to the new addition. Otherwise, the exterior of the administration building will change very little, says Mary Pat Crozier, Furman’s manager of capital construction.

The Personnel and Major Gifts departments, currently located in the basement of the building, should not be affected by the construction. The second floor, which houses Development, Academic Affairs and the President’s Office, will also face few disruptions from the renovation, she says.

Financial Aid, Academic Records, Student Services and Admissions are scheduled to move to the administration building late next fall. Once Financial Aid and Admissions leave the basement of the Earle Infirmary, the area will be revamped for Financial Services and Administrative Services.

To make way for the construction, several offices have been temporarily displaced. They are:

• Marketing and Public Relations, now located in the basement of the library, near the Print Shop and the Department of Military Science. The office will eventually be housed in Hipp Hall, a new academic building to be constructed near the University Center.

• Academic Records, which has moved to the Haynsworth Common Room in Furman Hall and will return to the administration building once the renovation is completed.

• Vice President for Student Services Harry Shucker and his assistant, Lucy Dean, who are currently located in the Career Services area of the University Center. They will return to the administration building. Carol Daniels, Student Services Coordinator, and her assistant, Theresa Cureton, have moved permanently to the University Center.

• University Housing, now in a modular office unit in the parking lot behind Lakeside Housing. University Housing will eventually be located in Judson Hall.

• Financial Services and Administrative Services, now in a modular unit near the Theatre. Both offices will eventually move to the basement of Earle Infirmary.
