Introducing CCLC
By James A. Inman

With this column, I'm pleased to introduce you to the Center for Collaborative Learning and Communication (CCLC), an exciting new facility that will be open for the fall term.

The CCLC's mission is to promote writing, communication and technology excellence and to support collaborative teaching and learning at Furman. Located on the lower level of the James B. Duke Library in the area formerly occupied by Military Science, the CCLC offers several different types of spaces: o Informal Gathering Areas:

Small rooms with comfy chairs where you can come to relax and talk about ideas with friends and colleagues;

Collaborative Workstations: Flexible spaces that include one computer and a round table which seats four to six group members;

Communications Stations: Small private areas for one or two people to use a single computer; and

Multimedia Studios: Closed spaces where you can do audio and video mixing and editing, as well as practice oral presentations on camera.

Across these spaces, CCLC will have some of the most sophisticated technologies on the Furman campus. The facility will be staffed by student consultants who are formally and thoroughly trained to help you become the best writers, communicators and technologists you can be.

You can meet a consultant in any of the spaces described above, which means you can work, for instance, at a computer terminal with a consultant to learn how to create a Web site or talk with a consultant about a paper or presentation in one of the informal gathering areas.

Additionally, CCLC brings a series of virtual consultation options, meaning you can have a consultation from your dorm room or office, or even from the beach. Virtual consultations require either e-mail or MOO proficiency, and CCLC consultants will help you to learn these media.

Other CCLC programs include resource development and workshops. The CCLC serves the broad Furman community - students, faculty, staff and their families.

I hope you'll consider stopping by to visit. The CCLC staff will be delighted to give you a tour of the facility and talk with you in detail about its programs.

James Inman is director of the Center for Collaborative Learning and Communication.
