"Boss to the Psychology professors" honored

Lib Nanney, longtime secretary in the psychology department, was honored April 16 as the recipient of the Chiles-Harrill Award. The honor is presented annually to a faculty or staff member who has made substantial contributions to students’ lives.

Nanney joined Furman in 1967 as a member of the physics department. Her career with the psychology department began in 1972 when Charles Brewer claims to have "stolen her away from the physics department."

Nanney has come to exemplify the spirit of the Chiles-Harrill award. "Nobody does it better," claims Brewer. "Lib literally runs the psychology department. She is an advisor and friend to students, a boss to the psychology professors and a friend to everyone who walks through the door."

The award, established last year, is named in honor of Marguerite Chiles and Ernest Harrill. Chiles joined the university’s staff in 1942 as director of student personnel; she retired in 1980 as vice-president for student affairs. Harrill, a longtime member of the political science department, also served as dean of students for many years. The 1998 Chiles-Harrill Award recipient was Betty Alverson.
