State wrestling championships to be held at Furman

A different kind of wrestling is coming to Timmons Arena. It will be the site of the 1999 South Carolina State High School Wrestling Championships February 26-27.

The event will mark the first occasion that the state championships for all three school classifications (A-AA, AAA, and AAAA) will be held at one facility. Normally each division has its own tournament at different venues in Columbia.

More than 100 high schools will be represented at the two-day tournament. The preliminary rounds will begin Friday evening. Consolation and semifinal matches will be held Saturday afternoon, with the finals tentatively scheduled for 6 p.m.

For more information, contact Tony Caterisano, a high school league wrestling official and health and exercise science professor, at (864) 294-3421.
