Since Furman is such a close community, it is not uncommon for issues and rumors to quickly spread throughout the student population. This site is dedicated to addressing these issues and dispelling as many rumors related to University Housing as possible. Please feel free to submit below a rumor that you have heard or just ask a question that you have, and we will respond with an answer.

What are the quiet hours for residence halls?? I know it's unfortunate, but I live in Ramsay outside the parlor, and there are always activities (whether announced or not) that happens at unusual hours (such as friday nights/saturday mornings past midnight, or early weekend mornings) Usually it's a big group, and the noise level is way too loud in my opinion...is there anyway this can be fixed? Hi I already got accepted and paid my $400 dollar deposit. I was wondering when I would get my housing form because I suffer from migraines and rooming with another person would be pretty difficult so I would like to get a single room but I have not received any information about the form that I have to fill out? (1/26/08)
Letters were mailed last Friday, so check your mail today or tomorrow. Housing request forms will not be available until May. However, all medical or disability requests must be on file in Disability Services, so you may want to go ahead and contact Gina Paris (Director of Disability Services) at gina.paris@furman.edu.
Is there any action that can be taken be residents of communities that are being disrespected by fraternities living in the area. This is an increasing problem! They are already breaking the law and county codes by living in single family dwellings, do I need to just report them to County Codes and GC Sheriff's department? (1/20/08)
Please notify Ms. Carol Daniels, Student Services Coordinator, at 864.294.2203 or carol.daniels@furman.edu. You may also contact the local police to address immediate concerns.

"furman university policy does not allow coed housing" so... why do you call it coed housing? (1/8/08)

Has there been a "favorite" residence hall for freshmen in the past? (1/7/08)
Yes, but as the buildings are being renovated, students' perceptions of favorite buildings has leveled out amongst many of the them. It really depends on the side of campus, type of bathroom, and different ammenities the student is interested in.

What is the housing policy on furniture in front of the heating/cooling units? (12/17/07)
Nothing can be within three feet of the front of the unit. This is for two reasons: #1 - to allow proper air flow to the unit, and #2 - so the Facilities Services personnel can service the unit as needed without having to move furniture out of the way.
Random question, but what are the measurements of the heating/cooling units in the rooms, particularly the ones in McBee Base? (12/17/07)
3'9" wide and 21" tall

Who do we contact about getting back into the dorms before jan 2. Sororities have workshops all day on the second so all of us who live farther away have to get back on the 1st so it would be really nice if we had somewhere to stay. (12/3/07)

There is not a specific policy about painting banners in the Helmsman. However, our policy does prohibit damage to University property, which includes accidental spills of paint on carpets and balcony surfaces. Therefore, we do not allow the painting of banners in campus housing. Thank you for helping us take care of campus housing.

Where is the closest trash room to Ramsay? (9/9/07)
Please check with your RA or custodian. Thanks.
I've heard that since move-in, there have been two separate instances of people living in K being "attacked" by ants in bed to such an extant as to cause extreme allergic reactions. Why, after the first student suffered multiple ant bites/stings, was the building not immediately fumigated? And why was the second victim not provided something as rudimentary as a new mattress? Finally, why was the second person not given appropriate treatment at the infirmary? This person was told she did not have ant bites when she was obviously covered in them. As someone allergic to ant bites/stings, this situation concerns me. I cannot afford to be bitten/stung repeatedly. If these rumors are true, what does Housing intend to do to correct the situation? (9/8/07)
We are having an ant problem this year and have received several maintenance requests already regarding ants. The exterminator sprayed several apartments last week and the list includes several more this week. Our very hot and dry summer has a great deal to due with the ants traveling indoors. We have not heard anything about residents being attacked or any allergic reactions. We will continue to send the exterminator to any apartment that submits a maintenance request for ants. You can also kill them with a can of ant spray from Wal-Mart.

Headboards are not included with the lofted beds. In some rooms a bed cannot fit flush into a corner, and therefore your pillow, head rest will just tobble off the back. Is there a way to attach a headboard to the lofts? (9/7/07)

Are the double beds in the norh village apts able to be put on bed-raisers? the website says the "bottom bunk" has 14" of space under for storage, but we're assuming these beds would not be bunked? (8/28/07)

We want to get a carpet remnant that covers our whole floor. What is normally done with the carpet at the end of the year? (8/20/07)

Your site has been extremely helpful in so many ways, but a discrepancy still seems to exist regarding the size of beds/mattresses/sheets for Gambrell. The site states regular size; my phone call response was extra long. We're confused....! (8/17/07)
We are glad you have found this Web site helpful. The beds in Gambrell ARE extra-long (see more details at http://www.furman.edu/housing/rhnew.htm#gambrell. We have looked for this discrepancy and cannot find it anywhere. If you don't mind, please e-mail the direct url to jason.cassidy@furman.edu. Thanks so much!
The College Carpets Link is not working. (8/16/07)
We just checked and it is working just fine. Make sure you have Adobe Acrobat reader on your computer so it will open the order form.
Are there any sinks in Blackwell in the rooms? (8/16/07)
No.
Are there any shelves built into the walls of McGlothlin? (8/16/07)
No.
Where is the kitchen located in Manly? Looked but couldn't find it!! Thanks! (8/15/07)
It is a part of the laundry room.
I am so glad that College Carpets is going to be helping out again this year! I have repeatedly tried to call them but have had no response. Is there anything else I should know in regard to getting in touch with them or an alternative number? Thanks! (8/15/07)
We are glad too. Just submit your order using the form on our Web site. The man who provides this service is usually swamped this time of year at other schools that open earlier than Furman. He is reliable.
Are toasters allowed? (8/14/07)
Yes.
Will the floorplan for Judson be put up? (8/14/07)
Yes, but not until after classes begin. Our staff is busy preparing for your arrival. Thanks for your patience.
Are there any shelves built into the wall in Gambrell besides those in the closet? (8/14/07)
No.
Is there a laundry service you can pay for? (8/13/07)
No. College is a time to for doing your own laundry :-) The laundry machines do not require money though.
Can you mount a tv on the wall in Gambrell? (8/13/07)
If it is possible to mount a TV without putting bolts, screws, etc. into the wall, go for it.
Can you get in trouble for having alcohol in your pictures? (8/13/07)
If pictures (print or Web-based) are reported to Public Safety or University Housing that show Furman students allegedly violating University policies, we will want to meet with those students to get their perspective on the picture. If it is determined that violations have indeed occurred, students can be adjudicated. However, if it is determined that the pictures are from home, vacation, etc. we may just have a teachable moment with the student. The moral of the story: be smart about what you take pictures of and where they surface, especially if the internet is involved.
Is there somewhere to see the room layouts for Manly? Many of the other halls are listed with detailed views and pictures, but Manly is not. Or Is there another hall that has the same floor plans? (8/13/07)
Unfortunately, we have not been able to put all of the diagrams on the Web site yet. We are working on it. The rooms in McGlothlin have a very similar layout. Sorry for the inconvenience.
Do the closets in McGlothlin have doors? (8/13/07)
None of the closests in the residence halls have doors, inlcuding McGlothlin.
Is the (admittedly small) kitchen in Manly gone? You only mentioned the ones in Blackwell and Poteat when the one in Manly is most convenient. (8/13/07)
Sorry about that. Meant to include the Manly kitchen on the list before. There is still a small kitchen in Manly.
Are you able to loft the beds in chiles? (8/13/07)
Yes, but you may want to see the pictures of the different configurations on the loft order form. We think the bunk beds make for the best arrangement in Chiles and Gambrell.
It looks like Geer has rooms that are not exactly "square". I have seen the measurements on-line but what is the largest carpet size you would recommend? I really want wall to wall but don't know how to get that.... (8/12/07)
If you want wall to wall carpet, get a piece that is larger than the dimensions provided on the Web site and plan to bring a carpet knife to install it.
When/If we opt to get our own carpet, would the carpet people be allowed to install it, or would we have to do it ourselves; also, are lofted beds so heavy that we wouldn't be able to lift them to get the carpet underneath? Thanks! (8/12/07)
You may have whomever you like install your carpet as long as you are present to let them in your room after the residence halls officially open. The lofted beds can be moved by two people. If you need help, just contact the Housing office during office hours.
One of your responses stated there were 4 outlets in the rooms in Blackwell. I 'm assuming a double room and there are 2 plugs in each outlet for a total of 8 plugs. Does this mean that each person can have only 4 electical items since extension cords are prohibited? And does the microwave fridge combo take up one or two of these 8 plugs? (8/12/07)
You may use a power strip with a surge protector. Only extension cords are prohibited.
How many single and / or double rooms are on the third floor in Blackwell? (8/12/07)
Approximately 50 students live on the third floor in mostly double rooms.
Where are the hall bathrooms located on the third floor in Blackwell? (8/12/07)
On each hall.
Does Blackwell have any lounge areas? If so, where are they located? (8/12/07)
No.
Does Blackwell have a kitchen? If so, what appliances are in the kitchen? (8/12/07)
Yes. There is a refrigerator, oven and stove.
What is the inside width of the closet in McGlothin? I would like to place a curtain over the space using a tension rod. Also, how wide is the inside space of the window. Would it work to use two tension rods (one over the other) to hang a sheer curtain and regular curtain inside the window? Thanks! (8/12/07)
The closet in McGlothlin is 36" wide. The space inside the window is 87" wide. This is for both windows measuring on the inside. It may be possible to hang two rods.
Is there a kitchen one can use if they are housed in Geer? (I love to bake!!) (8/10/07)
You can use the kitchen in Manly, Poteat or Blackwell.
Does Geer have a kitchen? (8/10/07)
No.
Would you be able to help with this? I know that I must register my car on-line for a parking permit, and I have done this. How will I receive my parking sticker for the fall--is it by mail, or do I have to go pick it up? (8/9/07)
Housing does not manage parking. Please contact Joyce Burgess in the Student Business Center regarding parking questions.
We have received the message about the previous carpet vendor not being available for the fall....We will be in Geer and would really like wall to wall carpet installed before we arrive so we can go ahead and move right in because of limited time/help....are there any other possibilities of maybe accomplishing this? Thanks!! (8/9/07)
We are really sorry that this has happened. Unfortunately, we do not have other options. One thought...since upperclassman have three days to move-in that should give you more time if you want to install carpet prior to unloading your car. Thanks for your understanding.
Are there built-in lamps in Blackwell? (8/8/07)
Yes, at the desks.
I am leasing a loft in Townes (top floor). Will the mattress be a standard twin or will it be extra-long? Thanks. (8/8/07)
Mattresses in Townes are standard twins.
I am leasing a loft for Gambrell. Will the mattress still be a standard twin, or will it be extra-long? (8/7/07)
The mattresses in Gambrell are extra-long.
I will be living in Gambrell next year and have a couple of questions. I read that there are built in desk lamps-can you please expand on that subject? Also, are all the doors in Gambrell magnetic and how many shelves are in the closet? (8/7/07)
Gambrell no longer has desk lamps because they were removed along with the built-in furniture during the renovation this summer. Please let us know where you read this information so we can remove it. We thought we completely revised the Gambrell information. The doors are metal. The shelves in the closets are adjustable and pictures are available at http://www.furman.edu/housing/rhnew.htm#gambrell.
How much does basic cable cost and how do I sign up for it. Is their a site for this information? (8/7/07)
All rooms have basic cable and there is no charge.
There is still no form for getting carpet in advance through a vendor. Does it look like this is going to work out or should one plan to buy a remnant after arriving? (8/6/07)
We apologize for this delay. Our carpet vendor of many years as just decided to get out of the business. We are looking for an alternate option and will keep you posted.
Since the bunkbeds in Blackwell don't have rails, is there any way for us to buy a rail and attach it to the top bunk? (8/6/07)
Unfortunately, there are no safety rails available for the bunkbeds in Blackwell. However, you may be able to construct something when you arrive and see the beds. Just do not permanently attach anything to the bed frame (i.e. scew a rail into the frame).
Do all closets in Blackwell have the shelving and 3 level rods in them? (8/5/07)
The closets do have shelving. There is one hanging rod at the top portion of the closet.
I just checked my parking permit for this coming year ( i will be in H) and the website said my assignment is "N2". What exactly does this mean? (8/4/07)
Housing does not manage parking. Please contact Joyce Burgess in the Student Business Center regarding parking questions.
Rumor is that the Freshmen dorms will be open on Friday August 17 from 1 to 3 for anyone who wants to come see the insides of the rooms. Is this true? (8/4/07)
On August 10, 17 & 24 between 1-3 p.m., some of the residence halls will be available for students who desire to see their room. Visitors should contact our office 10-15 minutes prior to their arrival to campus and we will direct them to meet a custodian who will show them their room (if it is available). You may call 864.294.2092 to find out which buildings are available on these dates.
Do all dorms have their own laundry facilities? (8/4/07)
Yes.
Hello, my roommate and I have decided to bunk our beds in Poteat this year. How do we go about bunking them--do we do it ourselves or request it be done? If we need to request it, whom should we contact? Thanks for your help :) (8/4/07)
You may request the Housing staff to bunk your beds when you arrive to campus. Just ask your RA or custodian on check-in day.
In my housing letter it said i have an apartment in blackwell, does that mean i have a bigger room? and if so, what are the approximate demensions and any additional accessories to the room? (8/3/07)
This does not make sense. Please call the Housing office at 864.294.2092 for further clarification. Thanks.
How many outlets are there in Blackwell and how spaced out are they? (8/3/07)
There are four outlets spaced approximately six feet apart. This varies by room, but this gives you an idea of what to expect.
Due to the limited space in Blackwell, can a student hang a shelf on the wall inside the bunk to house an alarm clock, etc...? (8/3/07)
Students may not drill into the cinderblock walls in any way. You may want to wait until you arrive before figuring this out, but maybe you can hang a shelf from the bed somehow (again without permanently altering the bed itself).
I still have not recieved my housing letter! I know my roommate, and she got hers (but she lives in the Greenville area), and she said one of our suitemates from Texas has hers. I live two hours from Greenville, a much smaller distance than Texas, so I'm starting to think my letter is lost. Do I need to be concerned, and if so, where do I need to send a message? Thanks! (8/1/07)
All letters were mailed Monday, July 23 so you should have received it by now. Please e-mail Robbie Giles at robbie.giles@furman.edu and she will send you another letter. We apologize for the delay.
Firstly, for the bunkbeds in Blackwell, about how much space is there between the bottom and top bunk? And is there a rail for the top bunk to keep one from falling? Secondly, telephones with cords are required, right? And thirdly, thank you very much. (7/31/07)
The distance between the bottom mattress and top bunk is 3.5". There are not rails for the top bunks. Telephones are not required, but encouraged. You are welcome.
Does Judson have an elevator? (7/31/07)
Yes, there is an elevator near Judson.
When using a loft, how much space is there between the mattress and the ceiling? Can one sit up? I read the height is adjustable. When does one request that? Thanks. (7/31/07)
It depends on the building and the height you set your loft. In most cases, you can sit on the top of it. The height can be adjusted once you get to campus.
Can you unstack the bunk beds in Chiles? (7/31/07)
Yes, but it minimizes the amount of floor space in your room.

RLC provides basic utensils (pots, pans, etc.) in each area of campus for students to check out. You may also consider purchasing your own personal items from CollegeKitchen at http://www.collegekitchen.com/furman.
When will the carpet order form be ready? Thanks! (7/30/07)
We apologize for this incovenience. We are having some difficulty with the carpet vendor. Please stay tuned...
Pictures of the windows in Blackwell do not have any blinds or window treatments shown. What does the University provide? Also, could you please confirm the venetian blinds on the closet doors. Thanks (7/29/07)

Are any kinds of string/Christmas/rope lights allowed in the dorms? thanks! (7/30/07)

We are still working to get all floorplans and room diagrams on our Web site for each residence hall. We apologize for the inconvenience.
I am lofting a bed in Townes next year and -I am trying to hang a shelving unit from the loft. I was wondering what the thickness of the wood is? (7/28/07)
It depends where you are wanting to hang the unit. Keep in mind that you cannot permanently attach anything to our furniture. Call 864.294.2092 if you have more specific questions.
In gambrell there is no number next to the number of closets in a double room, is there just one or is there one per person? (7/27/07)
There is one large closet with two sides. Both sides have organizer units - one for each student.

They are lofted already.
Where can the cable be found in Blackwell dorm? And, Is it possible to have a futon in Blackwell as well? (7/27/07)

Yes, these diagrams are reliable. Many of the rooms share the same floorplan.
Can you unbunk the beds in Blackwell? (7/26/07)

The loft height can be adjusted. The dresser will fit under an unlofted bed in Poteat.
I know the dates returning students can return to campus from the Academic Calendar, but when do we find out the times we are allowed to check in? Also, this is my third summer using your site, and I must say it has been very helpful. Thank you for your time and effort. (7/26/07)
The check-in times are always available at http://www.furman.edu/housing/assignments.htm. We are glad our Web site has been beneficial to you.
Are dorms in the Blackwell 300s on a third floor? (7/25/07)
Yes.
The mattresses in Townes are listed as standard twins but also as 36" x 80" which I think means extra long. I need to order a close-fitting allergy cover and need to know exact dimensions. Also need to know depth - 9 or 12 inches? Thanks! (7/25/07)
Most of the beds in Townes are indeed standard size. However, due to the loft program there are some extra long beds in Townes too. If you have need dimensions for a specific bedroom's mattress, please contact Jim Braziel at 864.294.2092.

Your campus box number is in your assignment letter.
When I got my rooming letter, it had our phone number in it; is this an extention, and what number will people off campus need to dial to reach us? Thanks! (7/24/07)
That phone number is the number to your actual bedroom. People need to dial the full number from off campus to reach you.
I have a room assignment in Poteat with a single digit, does that mean I'm on the first floor with all the 100's? (7/24/07)
No. This means you are assigned on Poteat base.
Are the beds in Judson 400 already lofted? (7/24/07)

Have rooming assignments been mailed out yet? Thanks! (7/23/07)
They were mailed this afternoon.
If you just found out your roommate is transferring, will housing give you another roommate or will you have the room to yourself? (7/23/07)
We will only cancel a student's assignment once Housing receives confirmation that a student is indeed transferring. If there are students on a waiting list, we will then assign them to these available spaces. If the space is not needed, you may end up with the room to yourself, at least for the next term.
What is the policy on grilles in North Village? Especially for apartments on the bottom floor. I recognize that charcoal grilles are available but often those do not suffice. I have also heard that some types of grilles are acceptable and others not. Please clarify housing's position on this. (7/23/07)
Grills that require charcoal, gas, or other flammable materials are not allowed. You may use the grills that are permanently installed throughout North Village. Also, George Foreman grills are permitted.

Unfortunately, we do not have extra chairs to rent. Each summer, when a residence hall is renovated, it gets all new furniture. Ramsay is scheduled for renovation next summer. Sorry about that.
How high above the ground do the beds sit in Poteat if they are not lofted? (In other words, is there room for storage under the bed even if I don't loft it?) (7/18/07)

I will be in Townes next year and have ordered a lofted bed. Last year my lofted bed in Poteat had an extra long mattress. Will the lofted bed in Townes have an extra long mattress as well? Someone in the housing office told me it will be an extra-long mattress because there is only one size loft but an answer below (6/5/07) asking the same question states "The lofts will work with the standard length beds." Can you clarify? Thanks. (7/18/07)
The mattresses in Townes are standard, not extra-long.
When will Popeat's renovation be completed? (7/17/07)

In Lakeside Housing, can you bring your own shower head, or is the one provided permanent? Thanks! (7/17/07)
Students may not change their showerheads. Thanks for your cooperation.
I'm an incoming freshman woman, and I would feel a lot better if I could carry pepper spray with me (even though Furman is a pretty safe, it pays to be careful). I know that firearms are not allowed on campus, but I haven't seen any policy on things like pepper spray. I know that this doesn't have much to do with housing, but any information would be a great help. Thanks! (7/16/07)
Pepper spray is allowed as long as it is not used inappropriately. If it is abused, then it will be considered a weapon and adjudicated accordingly.
Do the Poteat beds come regular or bunked when you arrive? If you want to loft them, how much does it cost to lease a loft? Thank you :) (7/14/07)

We have already begun the assignment process, so it is too late. Sorry.
My roommate wants to put up a string of Chinese lanterns in our dorm, and said that it's ok as long as they're strung on a lofted bed and not taped up on the ceiling. However, I recall reading that all string-type lights are prohibited in the dorms, but can't find exactly where that is stated. Could you clear this up for us? Thanks! (7/8/07)
Furman's policy prohibits all string lights and rope lights. Therefore, these Chinese lanterns would not be allowed, even if they are not plugged in. Sorry about that, but student safety is our top priority and these string lights are a fire safety hazard.
Does Ramsay have the metal or wooden bed frames? If metal, are they possible to bunk? (7/7/07)
Most of Ramsay has the metal bed frames still. Either way (metal or wood), the beds can be bunked.

I'm a rising freshman and I filled out my residency survey thing and forgot to put my roommate's name in the request box, but she put my name in hers. Are we ok? (6/29/07)

When will the link work for ordering carpet? (6/25/07)
The new order form will be available in late July.
I will be in Geer next year and know that it has not been renovated recently (and does not have the newer furniture). I will be lofting my bed. Will the desk provided fit comfortably under the bed (sideways), and also what type of chair is provided-is it just a plastic type chair? If so, would it be advantageous to bring a decent computer chair from home? Thanks! (6/23/07)
The desk will fit under the lofted bed. Most rooms in Geer have the plastic chairs, so you may want to bring your own. We will store the plastic chair if you do not want one. However, we do NOT store the wooden chairs in most other residence halls.
Is it possible to un-loft a bed in McGlothlin, even if the cost remains the same? (6/22/07)
Yes, but the parts must remain in the room.
Is it true I can't have a second fridge in the dorm room? (6/19/07)
That is correct. A microfridge is provided in each residence hall room. We do not allow additional microwaves or microfridges because they overload the circuits and are a fire hazard.
Is there a link that will lead to a page telling students what appliances are acceptable in the dorm rooms? (6/13/07)
In the Helmsman, under Fire Safety you can find a list of prohibited items.
Is there enough room in the window frame with the venetian blinds to put up a tension rod for room-darkening drapes? (6/12/07)
Yes.
If I am looking to bunk my bed next year, does this require me to purchase a loft or are the provided beds able to be bunked already? Also, how do rising sophomores apply for parking next year? (6/10/07)
You are not required to lease a loft in order to bunk your beds. You can just request Housing to bunk your bed when you get to campus at no cost. You need to contact the Student Business Center about parking.
Do NV bathrooms have shower curtains or bath mats or do students need to provide them? (6/7/07)
No, students must provide their own shower curtains and bath mats.
What are the dates for returning students to move into NV next fall? (6/6/07)

You should have already received a letter from Housing requesting information from you. In this letter, it says that freshman will get their housing and roommate assignments in late July.
Two years ago, our family ordered wall to wall carpet at Furman from College Carpet for my sister. They did a great job and would also install it for a small extra charge. My parents are older and this would be a big help to us to get it installed as well for this fall. Are we able to still use this company or would Furman install wall to wall carpet for an extra fee? (5/22/07)
Yes, College Carpet will be the vendor that you can purchase carpet from over the summer. If you make personal arrangements for him to install it for you, that is not a problem with us.
Hi. I'm not sure I understand what exactly the courses you take as part of Engaged Living have to do with the Poteat Residence Hall. Can you still take those classes if you decide to live in a difference residence hall? and what would be the advantage of living in Poteat and taking these classes. Thanks. (5/21/07)
Unfortunately, you cannot participate in these specific classes and live in another residence hall. Again, there are several advantages to participating in this program. We would encourage you to read over this information at http://www.furman.edu/housing/engagedliving/. You may also contact Rod Kelley, Engaged Living Fellow, at rod.kelley@furman.edu.
Does Poteat have an extra charge? (5/21/07)
Yes. Poteat will be carpeted next year and costs $128 extra per student for the year.
Do you have a carpet person to recommend to put down carpet for rooms in Geer for fall? (5/18/07)
You may order carpet over the summer at http://www.furman.edu/housing/returningservices.htm. The carpet will be available in your room when you arrive, but you still have to install it.
How much extra does McGlothlin cost? (5/17/07)
A double room in McGlothlin costs $448 more per student for the year than a regular double room. These rooms have wall-to-wall carpet, a lofted bed for each student, and a two-person couch for the additional cost.
Will poteat have new furniture? (5/16/07)
Poteat already has the newer furniture.
What are the additional costs for living in Chiles or Gambrell for the 2007-2008 year? (5/15/07)
$128 per student for the year. These rooms have wall-to-wall carpet for the additional cost.
When Gambrell is remodeled this summer, what all will change. Will the improvements be comparable to those in the 2006 Chiles remodel? Will closet systems be installed? (5/14/07)
The renovations in Gambrell this summer will mirror the renovations made to Chiles last summer. The built-in furniture is being removed from Gambrell and will be replaced by a new desk, dresser, chair, and bed. The rooms will also be carpeted and the closet systems will be installed.
When do graduating seniors who did not choose to donate their housing deposit to the senior gift receive their refund? (5/14/07)

RLC's Web site is http://www.furmanrlc.org/
Will Poteat and Gambrell both be remodeled in time for freshmen to move in, fall '07? (5/5/07)
Yes.
Is there any place on the Furman website which lists the apartments in North Village as singles or doubles? If not, is it possible to update this information? (5/3/07)
Buildings A-F have six shared bedroom apartments each (-02 and -08). The remainder of the apartments in these buildings are private bedroom apartments.
Are homestyle lofts allowed in geer next year? If not what are the options? (5/2/07)
Homestyle Lofts will still be allowed next year. However, they will be subject to a safety inspection by our staff since they have been around for a while now. So, if the loft is in rough condition, it is plausible that Housing would not allow a student to use the loft. Otherwise, Housing leases lofts to students each year and this information will be available later in the month.
Do they have the dimensions or pictures or links to rooms in Chiles anywhere on the website? (4/30/07)
http://www.furman.edu/housing/rhnew.htm#chiles

No, you may contact Mr. Eric Fisher and be approved to stay through June 3, 2007.
Will Manly 100 be a fraternity hall next year? (4/23/07)
Yes, the annex of Manly 100 is the SAE hall.
Are the beds in NV actually full-sized, or will twin-XL bedding still fit? (4/21/07)
The beds in North Village are full size.
Is Poteat housing reserved soley for the Engaged Learning program? (4/13/07)
Yes, Poteat is set aside for the Engaged Living program.
What is the difference between a residence hall singles room and an upgraded singles room? (4/3/07)
The upgraded singles have carpet and a loft (and cost more).
What is the maximum length of time a person can have a visitor staying on campus in their apartment or dorm room? (3/29/07)
Page 41 of the Helmsman states "Resident students are responsible for their guests? conduct in university housing. This includes hosting prospective students. No student may have an overnight guest in his or her room or the housing facilities for more than two consecutive evenings without written permission from the appropriate Area Coordinator."
What are some of the changes going to be for Gambrell? Will Carpet be installed in some of the rooms, and is there going to be new furnature? If so, when can we find out what the plans for the new rooms are going to be (as well as the size of the furnature....possibility of lofting...) so we can figure out what to bring for next year, what to put in storage here in Greenville, ect. (3/28/07)
All built-in furniture will be removed. Walls will be painted. Windows will be replaced. New wiring installed. Floors will be carpeted. New furniture will be installed. All new room dimensions and furniture dimensions will not be available until July.
Is Townes going to get new furniture before next year? (3/28/07)
No, Townes will not get new furniture until its renovation scheduled for summer 2009.
Is there any way to find out which rooms are designated to RAs? (3/28/07)
The RA rooms remain the same from year to year. You may look in The Slate to see the RA roster and room assignments.
Is there any way you can put in a request for a specific room on a particular residence hall? (3/26/07)
Yes, you will be able to rank specific rooms in the Housing lottery.
I had some questions about the nature of the lottery for North Village Housing. If we apply for the lottery for a block (either co-ed or not) will that automatically put us in a private bedroom apartment or is it completely. Also, if we wait to do the lottery for the shared bedroom apartments, and don't get it, are left to live in the residence halls? We just want to avoid paying an extra 300 dollars for the private bedroom apartments, but we don't want to be that last ones in the lottery, especially if we end up in the Residence Halls for being cheap. Help??? Thank you! (3/26/07)
The blocks in North Village are comprised of private bedroom apartments only. There will be students who will not get an assignment in North Village and must then participate for something in the residence halls. If you wait for a shared bedroom apartment, you do eliminate other opportunities to get assigned in North Village for private bedroom apartments.
Is there wi-fi (for laptop computers) in the dorms or village apartments? (3/22/07)
North Village will be wireless by 2008. The residence hall rooms will not be wireless due to cinder block walls.
Will fraternity and sorority halls stay the same for '07-'08? (3/22/07)
No. Sigma Nu will move to Manly. Sigma Chi will be in Townes.
Are any dorms going to be renovated this summer? (3/18/07)
Gambrell will be completely renovated and get new furniture. The plan is for Poteat to get new carpet and fresh paint.
Is it true that chiles and gambrell are going to be coed next year? I'm a rising freshman, and that's the rumor that everybody's saying... and that would be really awesome because I like chiles but I want coed! (3/17/07)
Chiles and Gambrell will indeed be coed next fall. We will update our Web site to reflect these changes in the next month. Glad you are excited about the change.
Several of my friends and I are looking for floaters to hold our spaces Fall term. However, because we are thus far unable to find any, we may end up back in the dorms next year. Is there anyway that sophmores could hold our NV spots for the term that we are gone? (3/13/07)
Sophomores are not allowed to live in North Village. Sorry about that. Also, just because you do not find someone to fill-in for you fall term, does not automatically mean you will end up in the residence halls. You can fill-in for students studying abroad winter term or be assigned to spaces where students graduate or transfer. Of course, this is not guaranteed, but do not assume that you will definitely be back in the residence halls.
Could someone please tell me how much it would cost to hold an apartment for one term (fall) next year while on study abroad? (3/8/07)
Students paying to reserve their space while studying abroad must pay the full cost for that space. These costs are available at http://www.furman.edu/housing/lotteryfaq.htm#cost.
When are they turning on the A/C??? (3/7/07)
Please refer to http://www.furman.edu/housing/hvac.htm for an explanation. Thanks for your patience.
When are they turning off the power? (3/1/07)
There are no power outages that will impact campus housing over spring break. For updates, you can always refer to Public Announcements and/or Student News.
Are there substance free halls? (2/20/07)
No, but all of campus housing is dry (alcohol) regardless of age, smoking is prohibited in housing, and drugs are illegal. Therefore, all of campus housing is technically substance free.
Are the singles on the two ends of AD Hall bigger than the singles on the interior? And if so, whatre the dimensions of the interior singles? (2/4/07)
Room dimensions for each room on the AD Hall are available at http://www.furman.edu/housing/rhupper.htm#ad.
Foam mattress pads are prohibited. How about foam cushions? (2/3/07)
We actually do not prohibit the use of foam mattress pads or cushions.
Will sophomores in the Language House program live in NV or in Lakeside next year? (1/31/07)
Some sophomores in the LH program live in NV and others on Judson 200 this year. Plans for next year are not confirmed, but most likely the sophomores in the program will live in NV for 07-08.
Does NV A have single or double rooms? (1/31/07)
Buildings A-F have six shared bedroom apartments each. The remainder of the apartments in these buildings are private bedroom apartments.
I would like to know if there is any possiblity of maintaining one or several girls' floors where no male visitors are allowed. Seems like girls who would like to maintain their "privacy" ought to be able to do so. All the others options, except this one are available. (1/30/07)
University Housing is open to providing as many appropriate options for living space as possible. Since Furman no longer has an escort policy, it would be challenging to offer such a hall. However, if enough students are interested in this type of option, we would encourage you to take your idea to RLC for further consideration and a possible resolution from that student organization.
For new students starting this fall and already accepted via early decision, do we complete a housing form now? Is it like last year, where the sooner you complete and send in housing preference forms, the better in terms of getting your preference? (1/30/07)
Housing information was mailed to early decision students on Friday, 1/26. Housing request and roommate placement forms will not be available until May. Both regular decision and early decision students will get this information at the same time. You are correct that residence hall preferences will be considered in the order that these forms are submitted.
What are the options of housing assignments of a single junior female next year?? for the singles to work, we'd have to have hall baths? (1/24/07)
Information about the lottery process will not be available until late February and the actual available rooms and apartments for students will not be available until mid-April.
Are there any singles on campus that has a built-in bathroom or suite bath? (1/23/07)
Unfortunately, there are only two single rooms connected to a suite bathroom in our residence halls. These are typically assigned to students with physical disabilities.
Do you have any idea as of yet which dorms will be renovated in the summer of 2007? Will Greek hall locations more than likely remain the same as this year? (1/16/07)
Poteat and Gambrell will be renovated during the summer 2007. The hall designations (male, female, freshman, Greek, etc.) will most likely change a bit for 2007-08. This information will be available to students during spring term.
I have heard there are requirements for getting a NV apt with private bedrooms, such as having to be seniors, could you tell me more about that?? How can you get a NV apt with private bedrooms VS. shared bedrooms? or at least increase the chances or something? (1/10/07)
This is a complex process and detailed information will be available in mid-February. Stay tuned...
Is there drinking on campus? (1/10/07)
Furman is a dry campus, meaning alcohol is not allowed regardless of age.
Can you bring your own mattress for your dorm, or do you have to use the one provided? (1/10/07)
Yes, but the University's mattress must remain in the room. We cannot store it and students may not remove furniture from the room.
Alright another one for the housing, so is it impossible to live in NV (2 person private bedrooms) if I can't name another person as a roommate? would I just be assigned to a single residence hall or something? (1/10/07)
Yes. Students can only enter the NV lottery with four students per entry. The system will not accept less than four names per entry. If you cannot find a group of four, you would need to participate on another day of the lottery for doubles or singles.
I know housing staff does matching roommates with freshmen, but would that be done with upperclassmen if they can't find a roommate for NV? (1/9/07)
Students entering the lottery for NV must find three other roommates. Housing will provide an online bulletin board so students can post requests and look for roommates. However, it is ultimately up to the student to find their roommates. This actually applies for all upperclassman housing, even in the residence halls.
I have heard some complaints (including myself) about windows having no screens or bad sealing. I myself have problems everyday with ladybugs getting into the rooms through our windows even though I have screens. I just have a bad seal around it. Is there anyway this problem can be fixed? (1/5/07)
Ladybugs are a problem campus wide and they cannot be exterminated. However, if you believe the window or screen is damaged, you may submit a work order any time at http://www.furman.edu/housing/workorder.htm and our maintenance staff will be glad to come check it out.
Do the apartments in North Village have wall-to-wall carpeting or do you need to bring carpet for bedroom? (12/20/06)
Yes, the apartments are carpeted. You do not need carpet for the bedrooms in North Village.
After the break in on a female student a in North Village apartments there was talk of improving campus security by locking the back gate near North Village at night. Is the school going to implement this proceedure to increase security for North Village? (12/20/06)
In response to student and parent concern following two October incidents involving intruders, the President?s Council and Public Safety has limited campus access to only the main gate between 11:30 p.m. to 5 a.m. Campus entrances near Pepsi (softball) field, North Village and Timmons Arena will be closed during this time. The new gate rules will be enforced in mid-January after the Public Safety department and officers have had a chance to notify students.
Are coffee pots allowed in the rooms? (12/10/06)
Yes
I noticed that it says residence halls will be closed over Christmas break, but what about North Village apartments? Are you planning to have another power outage? (11/21/06)
The campus will be without power on 12/22-12/26 and South Housing will continue to be without power on 12/27-12/31.
About the pet issues, are there any exceptions? (11/19/06)
Fish are allowed; however, the container must be less than 10 gallons.
Are pets allowed in Furman Halls? (11/15/06)
According to page 38 of the Helmsman, "No animals may be kept in or near university housing for any length of time. Keeping a pet for a friend or having a friend visit with a pet for any length of time is prohibited.
Is there any way to control the temperature in the residence halls? With housing turning on the heat, my room is now 80 degrees and there's nothing I can do to cool it down! (11/2/06)
This question can be answered at http://www.furman.edu/housing/hvac.htm
I currently live in NV-F. I presume it's being renovated next summer. What will happen in that renovation? Currently, the floorboards are absolutely filthy, despite my incessant scrubbing. Also, there is hair waxed into the floor. Will things such as these be replaced? Or is it simply repainting? (10/27/06)
Typically, the renovation of a North Village Apartment building consists of re-painting wall and wood surfaces within the apartment. We assume the wood baseboards is being called "floorboards" and they will be painted as they are a wood surface. Due to the time lapse between the last renovation of Building F, some of the baseboard's painted surfaces has actually been stripped down to the raw wood, which basically looks soiled. This occurs when each August, prior to our students return, the tile floors are stripped and waxed using a high power buffer. The exterior doors, stair and hand railings are also painted and the wood decking is pressure washed and sealed. Toilet seats are replaced as needed, broken tiles replaced, flushkits repaired and other general repairs as needed are also completed. The living room carpet will also be replaced. As with all apartments, a contract cleaning company will be responsible for a thorough cleaning prior to the arrival of the residents. Residents at the time they move in are encouraged to contact our office should they feel something was overlooked in the renovation and/or cleaning of the apartment. Hair waxed into the floor should not be taking place and would have been addressed had our office been made aware of this issue at the time of move-in.
I have heard there have been some non-Furman men around No. Village Housing lately. Has FUPO beefed up security there & are they on the lookout for "low-lifes"? (10/18/06)
There have been reports of some suspicious individuals around campus housing in recent weeks. Public Safety has notified the campus community with descriptions of these individuals. Students are encouraged to always lock their doors, travel in groups, and report any suspicious activities or individuals to Public Safety.
I heard that it is a Furman tradition to throw students into the lake on their birthdays. Is that tradition still on? If so, some rules must be set. An article on the Furman Newsletter mentioned about the high level of bacteria in the lake... (10/6/06)
This has been a long time tradition; however, the University does not endorse this tradition because it is unsafe for several reasons...1) the lake is shallow and 2) the lake is VERY dirty. Happy Birthday!
My daughter rented a loft for the year but has decided not to use it. I thought I read on a former post that you had students that were waiting for a loft. I hate for it to go unused if there is someone who would like it. Please let me know who to call. (9/10/06)
You may contact Teresa Ponder at 864.294.2092.
I learned the answer to my question about shipping packages to students via UPS or FedEx and I thought I'd pass along that information to you. When I called Furman Central Receiving, they said to send the package via UPS or FedEx using the same address as if the package was being sent via mail. In other words, include the student's full name, the PMB #, Furman University, 3300 Poinsett Hwy., Greenville, SC 29613. The package will be delivered to Central Receiving and they will forward the package(s) to the Furman Student Post Office. Students will receive a notification in their mail box that they have received a package. They can take the notice to the window to retrieve their packages. Anyone sending packages has to realize that if you use upgraded delivery options such as 2nd day or next day, it does not mean that your student will receive the package the next day or the 2nd day--it just means that Furman Receiving will receive it then. No guarantees on how quickly something gets to the post office on campus. (9/5/06)
Thanks for sharing this information.
What's the mailing address for Blackwell? (9/3/06)
Mail is not actually delivered to the residence halls. Mail should be sent to Name, Campus Box #, 3300 Poinsett Hwy, Greenville, SC. 29613.
2 questions for Chiles: 1-We heard the new beds are bunk-beds. Can we un-bunk them upon arrival? 2- In Chiles Basement, are either of the 2 storage areas for students to store empty suitcases, and can students access the storage areas (i.e., are they unlocked)? (9/1/06)
All of our beds in the residence halls can be bunked. Yes, you can unbunk your beds in Chiles. Storage closets can be used for suitcases, but you need to work through your custodian to get in and out.
Does Poteat have a kitchen? Are there pots and pans, or just the stove? (8/31/06)
