Geer Hall(built in 1958) (refurbished in 2001) (next scheduled refurbishment in 2008)
In 1933, Bennette Eugene Geer was nominated for President. Geer received the A.B. degree in 1896 and then taught at Furman. He became a professor of English and then the dean of Faculty in 1907. Geer resigned from teaching and was president of Judson Mills prior to his short tenure as Furman president. He restructured the curriculum and focused on building a stronger relationship with the community. The University experienced financial concerns and his presidency has been described as turbulent. However, prior to becoming President, Geer helped secure the Duke endowment. He resigned in 1938.

Manly Hall(built in 1956) (refurbished in 2002) (next scheduled refurbishment in 2009)
Charles Manly was the second president of Furman. He served as president from 1881 to 1897 and also taught English. Manly focused on increasing the enrollment and endowment. In 1882, there were 50 students enrolled at Furman. Students who attended Furman lived in houses with Baptist families close to campus however as enrollment increased, Manly saw the need to experiment with a "mess" system -- several groups of students were given an opportunity to live on campus and a janitor prepared and served meals to them. This was successful and in 1896 there were 170 students attending Furman. Manly resigned in 1897 because the trustees wanted him to "canvass for students" and he was not interested in traveling.

Ramsay Hall(built in 1961) (refurbished in 2003) (next scheduled refurbishment in 2008)
David Ramsay was a Baptist minister and pastor of Citadel Square Baptist Church in Charleston who also served on Furman's Board of Trustees in the early years of the twentieth century. In 1912 he was named president of the Female College, which had separated four years earlier from Furman's control. Two years later he was responsible for changing the institution's name to the Greenville Woman's College. As president he brought the college to the brink of accreditation, increasing the quality and quantity of its faculty, students, and curriculum; he built a Fine Arts Center, gymnasium, and dormitory; he expanded the library, and he greatly liberalized regulations. He resigned in 1929.

Townes Hall(built in 1961) (refurbished in 2002) (next scheduled refurbishment in 2009)
Alexander Townes was a Greenville native who graduated from Furman just before the Civil War. (He served in the Confederate army and it was he who announced Lee's surrender at Appomattox to the city in April 1865!) After the war, he studied at the University of Heidlelburg in Germany. In 1878, Charles Judson, the President of the Greenville Female College, chose him as his successor when he returned to full-time teaching at Furman. Townes built a struggling little college with the help of Mary Judson, Charles' sister, who became his "Lady Principal." He kept the college going in spite of major financial problems, and managed to build the first of four wings to the central building. He resigned in 1894 after disagreements with the trustees.
