Senior Off-Campus Lottery
Room Selection (Housing Lottery)

 Declare Your Intentions

Each Furman student is required to declare their intentions regarding campus housing for 2008-09 no later than March 12, 2008.  Simply enter your information at Housing Intentions and make a selection from the screen that follows.  You may change your intentions as many times as you desire before the March 12th deadline.

Please note that declaring your intentions is only the first step in the room selection process, which includes requests to live off-campus.  Declaring your intentions does not mean that a housing assignment has been made or that a request to live off-campus has been granted.  All it means is that Housing & Residence Life will expect you to participate in the process below according to your selection.

 Off-Campus Exemptions

You may apply to live off-campus if you meet one of these criteria:

  • You will be living with your parent(s)/guardian(s) and commuting to campus. (Commuter Form)
  • You are a rising fourth-year student and will be living in a fraternity house.  Each fraternity is allowed to choose a predetermined number of rising fourth-year students to live in their house.  This is prearranged with Housing & Residence Life and each fraternity's president. (Fraternity Form)
  • You are a rising third-year student or fourth-year student and will be living in the Vista house.  The Vista House is allowed to choose six students to live in their house.  This is prearranged with Housing & Residence Life and the Vista House leadership.  (Vista House Form)
  • You are married or will be married during the 2008-09 academic year. (Married Form)
  • You are a rising fifth-year student.  Rising fifth-year students must apply to live off-campus unless they can 1) commit to living on-campus for both semesters, or 2) fill-in for a student who is on foreign study or a leave of absence for the fall semester only. (Fifth-Year Student Form)
  • You have a medical situation that requires off-campus accommodations. (Medical Form)
  • You have a financial situation that requires off-campus accommodations. (Financial Hardship Form)
  • You are a graduate student. (Graduate Student Form)

If you meet one of the above criteria and want to live off-campus, you MUST apply by completing the appropriate form.  This form MUST be submitted no later than Wednesday, March 12, 2008 at 5:00 p.m.  Approvals, when made, will only be granted for the 2008-09 year.  If approved, you must reapply for this exemption to live off-campus again the following year.  Students not approved must plan to participate in the room selection process, which begins April 22, 2008.

* Any student with a scholarship that covers their room cost is not eligible to live off campus.

Senior Off-Campus Lottery

Although Furman University has a four-year residency requirement, a predetermined number of rising fourth-year students will have the option of living off-campus.  This number is determined using the following formula:

Projected enrollment for Fall 2008

-

Total # of beds available on campus

-

# of exemptions

=

# of rising fourth-year students permitted to live off-campus

On March 26, 2007 between 7:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m., rising fourth-year students will have the opportunity to participate in the senior off-campus lottery (this includes rising fourth-year students going on fall term study abroad who want to live off-campus when they return).  These students may enter the lottery as an individual, a pair, a group of three, or a group of four.  Students may also enter in various gender pairings.  No preference is given to the size of the group or to gender.  Each group will receive a random computer-generated lottery number.

Once the submission window closes, the computer will order the groupings by lottery number.  Rising fourth-year students selected to live off-campus will be notified on March 31 and cannot participate in the room selection process to live on-campus.  If students decide to live on-campus after being selected to live off-campus, they will be added to the waiting list and assigned during the summer.  Students not selected to live off-campus must plan to participate in the room selection process, which begins April 22, 2008.

* Any student on a full scholarship is not eligible to live off campus.
