Important Information for Summer Counselors 2008


 

MANDATORY INFORMATIONAL MEETING FOR STUDENTS INTERESTED IN APPLYING FOR COUNSELOR POSITIONS WILL BE MONDAY, FEBRUARY 12 AT 4:00 P.M. IN THE WELCOME CENTER AND MONDAY, FEBRUARY 18 AT 4:00pm in WELCOME CENTER.

 

I.  Minimum Qualifications

a. Interest in working with students (ages 14-18) in an advisory capacity in a residential community.

b. Academic classification of sophomore or above at time of employment.

c. Minimum cumulative Furman GPA of 2.0 at time of employment.

d. Available for employment from July 12-July 26, 2008.

e. In good standing with Furman University.

f. The Counselor is a leader in the residence halls and must possess leadership abilities in terms of interpersonal skills, sensitivity to others' needs, assertiveness, enthusiasm, creativity, and good judgment.  The Counselor must demonstrate a commitment to his/her job description and goals of the Summer Scholars Program and a willingness to be a positive role model on and off campus.

g. The Counselor accepts the diversity of beliefs, values, and interests of the camp's students.  The Counselor must be consistent in behavior toward all students regardless of race, ethnic background, socioeconomic status, sexual orientation, and religion.

 

II.  Program Description

A. Summer Scholars:  This is an academic enrichment program that Furman University offers to young people as a means of acquainting prospective students to the university during the summer months.  These students can register for classes in areas such as psychology, computer graphic arts, health, mock trial, foreign languages, drama and leadership and the environment.  These courses will be provided over the course of two one-week periods and students can attend one class each week. Students attend classes from 9:00 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday; participate in evening and off campus trips. More information is provided on the web: www.furman.edu/summerscholars.

 

III. Responsibilities

A. Time Commitment: The counselor position is the counselor's principal activity.  Counselors are not allowed to be employed in any another job or take classes throughout the two-week period.

 

B.  Daily Time Commitment

1. The position requires 24-hour a day responsibilities.  However the program director does allow flexibility during the day to take care of personal needs.

2. Counselors must attend daily meetings with the Head Counselor and/or Camp Coordinator.

3. Counselors are responsible for being available by cell phone and responding to it 24 hours a day.

4. Counselors must be available to perform other duties as assigned during the day.

5.  Counselors must attend to all student needs and work directly with students from 6 p.m. until 9 a.m. daily. You will also be responsible for students staying over on Saturday, July 19. Activities will be planned for the afternoon and evening. All students and counselors are expected to be checked out of their room no later then 10:00 a.m. Saturday, July 26.

 

C.  Student/Participant Commitment:  The counselor should be aware of student needs and provide appropriate consultation and referral.  The counselor is expected to:

 

1. Listen to others with an attitude of concern and support.

2. Take the initiative in communicating with all students.

3. Discuss potential referrals and/or problems with the Head Counselor or Coordinator.

4. Recognize the limitations of the training and experience as a counselor.

5. Be available to students as much as possible.

6. Regard any personal information about students as confidential.

7. Establish and maintain a good working relationship with the Head Counselor.

8. Be outgoing in terms of relating to the students and counselors.

9. Be able to function in a multicultural environment.                                

 

D.  Activities: The counselor is expected to promote a community atmosphere for individual and group development by encouraging and facilitating activities.  The counselor is expected to:

 

1. Invite the formation of community by promoting get-acquainted activities, open, honest communication among students, and development of hall standards.

2. Assist the Head Counselor in planning and implementing evening and weekend activities, as well as plan and implement activities on the hall.

3. Where appropriate, assist in chaperoning field trips.

4.  Conduct evening hall meetings.

 

E.  Staff Training: The counselor is expected to participate in the staff training program designed to improve skills to meet the job expectations.

1. Attend training sessions to be held May 28 & 29

2. If 21 years of age, get certified to drive Furman University vans.

3. Read, understand, and be knowledgeable of the Rules of Conduct.

 

F.  Discipline: The counselor serves as a role model for others which includes assuming responsibility for creating an environment in which personal and social growth may occur.  The counselor is expected to:

 

1. Encourage individual responsibility and respect for others' development through role modeling.

2. Explain, support, and follow the regulations and policies outlined in the Expectations for Behavior.

3. Confront behavior or infractions which disrupt the environment in a manner consistent with training experience.

4. Confront any students that break the rules outlined in Expectations for Behavior.

5. Assist the Student Services Division and Public Safety in the prevention, investigation, and reporting of misconduct and damage to university property.

6.  Alert Head Counselor immediately regarding possible behavior problems or of students who have broken rules.

 

G.  Administration

1. Keep a continuous account of the number of residents on his/her hall while on the hall and off at activities/field trips and immediately report any changes to the Head Counselor or Coordinator.

2. Complete room check-in/check-out procedures.

3. Assist in emergencies, fire drills, report needed repairs, and other assigned duties.

4. Accompany a student to the infirmary or drive a student to the hospital and wait on him/her to be released in the event of a medical emergency. Must have

5. Perform other duties as assigned by the Head Counselor or Coordinator in support of the goals and objectives of the Student Services Division.

 

H.  Room Placement: Counselors will be placed in designated rooms in the residence halls. 

 

IV.  Compensation

 

Stipend:

Summer Scholars:     $800.00

 

Room and Board:

Room is provided for the two weeks of employment. All meals will be provided in the DH.

 

V.  Selection Timeline

March 3:  Applications due at 5:00pm

March 5: Email notification of interview

March 6-7:  Applicants sign up for interviews

March 10-15: Interviews

March 25:     Decision letters mailed

April 25-26 or May 28-29: 2-day Counselor Training (DATES TO BE CONFIRMED)

July 12: Move into rooms (late afternoon)

July13-19: First week of Summer Scholars

July 19: Activities with students staying over

July 20-26 Second week of Summer Scholars

July 26: Check Out by 10:00 a.m.
