ALL APPLICATIONS MUST BE SUBMITTED TO THE UNIVERSITY HOUSING OFFICE BY NOON ON TUESDAY, MARCH 18, 2008.

A. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - Freshmen Advisors, along with the Resident Assistants, are co-facilitators in the residence halls and should possess leadership abilities in terms of communication skills, sensitivity to others' needs, assertiveness, enthusiasm, creativity, good judgment, and a willingness to serve as a mentor.  In order to fulfill their orientation responsibilities, Freshmen Advisors should also be knowledgeable of campus organizations, resources, and facilities.  Freshmen Advisors are expected to demonstrate a commitment to the goals of Furman's residence hall program and are required to adhere to residence hall policies and Furman University individual conduct regulations.

The FRAD accepts the diversity of beliefs, values, and interests of Furman students. The FRAD must be consistent in behavior toward all students regardless of race, ethnic background, socioeconomic status, sexual orientation and religion.

The specific qualifications, requirements and responsibilities for the FRAD are outlined below.

  1. Interest in working with students in an advisory and mentoring capacity in a residential community.
  2. Academic classification of sophomore or above at time of employment.
  3. Minimum cumulative Furman GPA of 2.0 at time of employment.
  4. Be available for a full academic year (that includes not going on Foreign Study).
  5. Be in good standing with Furman University.
  6. Role model good decision making and uphold Furman policies.

B. ANTICIPATED TIME REQUIREMENTS

  1. Attend a training session on Friday, April 25 from 3-5:00 p.m.
  2. Attend a new staff dinner Friday, April 25 from 5:00-7:00 p.m. (location TBA), prior to assuming regular duties.
  3. Attend FRAD Training conducted August 19-21.  FRADs must return on Tuesday, August 19, 2008.
  4. Attend monthly meetings with AAC and other members of University Housing as necessary.
  5. Must be available to freshmen as much as possible.
  6. Must contact your freshmen during the summer prior to their arrival to welcome them.

C. APPLICATION PROCEDURE - FRAD applicants will apply as a hall set (this includes the RA roommate and FRAD pair).  The University Housing office will keep a list of those looking for a roommate. The on-line application will be available on Wednesday, March 12, 2008.  Each FRAD applicant needs to submit their own application and reference form by Tuesday, March 18, 2008.  After candidates have submitted their individual application and reference, the hall set needs to interview together.  Candidates should dress professionally for the interview.

D. ROOM PLACEMENT - FRADs will be placed in a designated FRAD room.  FRADs must submit their intentions regarding housing for 2008-09 at http://www.furman.edu/housing/intentions.htm by March 12 to be considered for positions in University Housing.
