Core Alcohol and Drug Survey

In an effort to assess the nature, scope, and consequences of alcohol and other drug use on Furman's campus, the Division of Student Services collects data each fall semester by administering the Core Alcohol and Drug Survey.  This survey was created in 1989 and expanded in 1994 by the Core Institute at Southern Illinois University Carbondale.  Results of this survey at Furman's campus are available at http://www.furman.edu/housing/data.htm.

First-Year Students

Before new students arrive to campus, the vice president for student services sends a letter to parents encouraging their support and assistance regarding their student's use of alcohol.  Once on campus, the president addresses the issue of alcohol abuse during the "Welcome to Furman" program for parents and students on the first day of new student orientation.  During the first evening on campus, students attend the TRANSITIONS program which portrays a real life party scene as well as addresses the consequences of alcohol use.  Also, the freshman hall student staff educate the first-year students about the alcohol policy and discuss the consequences of high-risk drinking.

Greek Organizations

Each fraternity and sorority offers an educational program for their members during the academic year.  IFC and Panhellenic also sponsor at least one CLP speaker annually.

Student-Athletes

Illegal use and abuse of alcohol is contrary to the mission of the NCAA and destroys such fundamental values as respect, fairness, civility, honesty and responsibility.  The NCAA national office and each member institution and conference take seriously the responsibility to present participation in sports as a positive experience for participants and fans alike.  This responsibility includes educating student-athletes about alcohol abuses and managing game facilities to ensure legal and responsible use of alcohol by fans associated with the event.  To curb illegal and irresponsible use of alcohol, each member institution and conference must take individual local action.

Furman's Athletic Department applies for funds from the NCAA Health and Safety Grants each year.  These funds are often used to bring speakers to Furman's campus.

AFS Shuttle

The Association of Furman Students (AFS) sponsors a shuttle service for students going off campus.  The shuttle typically runs on Friday and Saturday nights from 8 p.m. until 2 a.m.  A student driver and student dispatcher staff the shuttle.

HES 10

Wellness Concepts (HES 10) is a course required for all students.  The course includes a unit where students will study the theories of addiction, the short term and long term risk of alcohol and drug abuse, as well as methods to prevent substance abuse and treatment options for those who are struggling with substance abuse. The course will include textbook readings, relevant Web sites, and educational models that demonstrate the impact of alcohol abuse on the body.

Beer, Booze and Books

Furman's judicial officers use Jim Matthews' book entitled, "Beer, Boozes and Books," as an educational tool for students found responsible for violating Furman's alcohol and/or drug policies.

Prime for Life

PRIME For Life is program designed to gently but powerfully challenge common beliefs and attitudes that directly contribute to high-risk alcohol and drug use. The content, process and sequence of PRIME For Life are carefully developed to achieve both prevention and intervention goals. The program goals are:

• to reduce problems caused by high-risk drinking or drug use;
• to reduce the risk for long-term health problems and short-term impairment problems;
• to help people successfully protect the things they value.

Using persuasion-based teaching, instructors use a variety of teaching approaches, including interactive presentation and small group discussion. Participants use work books throughout the course to complete a number of individual and group activities. Material is presented using a DVD platform with animation, full-motion video clips, and audio clips to enhance the presentation.

Furman's judicial officers may sanction students found responsible for violating Furman's alcohol and/or drug policies to attend this six-hour workshop.  This workshop is also excellent as a preventive educational tool for student organizations (athletes, fraternities, sororities, etc.).
