Furman's CCLC Receives Mellon Foundation Support to Add a New Dimension Furman's Center for Collaborative Learning and Communications (CCLC) director, Jane Love, is expanding the scope of her department with funding from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. Love and computer science professor Kevin Treu are developing a multidisciplinary collaborative teaching and technology program with a database of information provided by Furman professors. (more)
National Science Foundation Funds Nanoscience Research and Education Furman is part of a technological revolution, according to Chemistry Professor Timothy Hanks, director of the university's nanoscience initiative. The National Science Foundation (NSF) recently awarded the program three grants to further nanoscience research and education. (more)
Furman Links K-12 Educators to the Library of Congress The Library of Congress (LOC) has awarded Furman University more than $1 million, since 2000, to initiate and maintain the Adventure of the American Mind project which links K-12 educators to the LOC's American Memory Historical Collection. Lilly Endowment Helps Students to Make Meaningful Vocational Choices In October 2002, Furman University was awarded a five-year, $2 million grant by the Lilly Endowment, Inc., to establish a Center or Theological Exploration of Vocation. One of the nation's top 50 liberal arts universities and an institution with a longstanding Christian heritage, Furman is one of the first 20 colleges and universities to receive a Lilly grant for the creation or enhancement of theologically-based vocational exploration programs. Exploring the World of Science at Furman University "It's a great time to be a psychologist," according to Furman Psychology Professor Judith Grisel. The enthusiasm Grisel has for her work compares to that of an award-winning journalist who reports on world events. The difference is that her specialty is neuroscience, and her world is the science laboratory. (more)
Furman a Big Hit with NASA One does not usually associate Furman's name with that of the National Aeronatics and Space Administration (NASA). But thanks to Professor Hayden Porter's research in the Department of Computer Science, Furman is playing a significant role in the development of parallel algorithms and interactive 3D visualizations and animations that will be used to analyze and interpret global weather patterns from NASA's TIMED satellite mission. Welcome to Furman's Grants and Sponsored Programs Web Site Funding from corporations, foundations and federal and state agencies increased from $2.6 million in fiscal year 1999-2000 to $11.8 million in fiscal year 2004-2005. This funding contributes significantly to faculty and undergraduate research, scholarships, internships, capital improvements, and equipment acquisitions, as well as to endowments for these and other purposes. The breadth and scope of grants funding is expected to continue to increase rapidly as Furman strengthens its position as one of our nation's premier baccalaureate liberal arts institutions. (more)
