Minutes – October 2, 2007
Present: Ken Abernethy, Robin Visel, Linda Bartlett, Ben Able, John Harris, Kristy Maher (reporting), Dan Koppelman, Doug Cummings, Dean Tom Kazee, Karin Bengtsson (guest)
The meeting was called to order at 3:00 pm.
The minutes from the previous meeting were approved.
The following proposals were recommended for approval upon furnishing additional information to the committee:
ENG 422 (Analysis of Text)
ENG 402 (Analysis of Text)
CHN 220 (Analysis of Text and World Cultures)
For Empirical: Human Behavior:
SOC 212
LNG 210
LNG 220
FR 405
GER 405
SPN 405
Ken Abernethy will speak with Jerry Cox regarding proposals LNG 210, LNG 220, FR 405, GER 405, SPN 405 about making each response specific to the course (there seems to be unnecessary overlap between proposals justifications). Descriptions should stand alone as responses to individual courses.
The committee requests further information from the author of the ENG 473 proposal (specifically examples), submitted for Analysis of Texts and World Cultures credit.
The committee recommended the following courses for Analysis of Texts credit.
FR 332
FR 417
GRK 321
PHL 201
The committee recommended the following courses for Global Awareness: World Cultures credits:
ANT 204 (and for Visual and Performing Arts)
CHN 225 (and for Visual and Performing Arts)
PS 46
The committee recommended the following course for Ultimate Questions credit:
SOC 233
Ken will approach the author of CHN 225 about limiting responses for Visual and Performing Arts to Option A only (editing out Option B and C).
The committee recommended that the form for APC approval be changed for the Analysis of Text core requirement to read: “Please describe, and provide an example of, how the course will address problems, complexities, and theories of interpretation of texts.”
The committee also recommended changing the “Human Behavior” core requirement to “Empirical Methods: Human Behavior” requirement.
The committee would like to bring to Brad Barron’s attention the fact that GRK 321 can be repeated once with change of author or topic with concerns regarding the computer logistics of this.
The committee requested that Lloyd Benson be invited to a committee meeting so that we are better informed when reviewing proposal requesting “Historical Analysis.” All courses currently applying for the “Historical Analysis” are tabled for a future meeting (including: ENG 434, HST 145, HST 351 and REL 251).
The committee request that the author of SOC 233 edit for spelling/grammar (e.g. “moodes”).
The meeting adjourned at 5:00.
