2008 Furman Golf Club Renovation
|
The Furman University Golf Club has been approved for a major renovation next year. In a constant effort to continually improve the facilities at the Furman Golf Club, a renovation of all 18 green sites will take place beginning May 12, 2008, and lasting until early October of 2008. The renovation will be a complete re-design of all 18 greens from 30 yards in and the two putting greens. The greens are to be built to USGA specifications with the installation of Champion bermuda grass. The design will be in a Donald Ross style that will follow the flow of the beautiful land that the golf course lays on. It will also include new green side bunkers and irrigation for the greens to allow run-up areas to be more accessible for the average player. The addition of 3 tee boxes for the golf teams and up to 12 new fairway bunkers will complete the transformation. The renovation will produce a first class course that will allow itself to be very fair and playable for the average golfer, but challenging for the low handicapper. Kris Spence has been chosen as the architect for this project. Kris is an up and coming architect in the golf design industry. He has completed projects such as Grove Park Inn (Asheville, NC), Mimosa Hills Golf & Country Club (Morganton, NC), Gaston Country Club (Gaston, NC), and Sedgefield Country Club (Greensboro, NC). Kris’s vision is excellent. He understands that the golf course is laid out well and the greens need to fall into the character of the golf course. He commented that a Donald Ross style design for the greens would be excellent. For more information on Kris you can go to http://krisspence.com/bio.html. Updates will be posted on a regular basis to the main page of the web site and a dedicated link for the renovation will be available on the left side of the main page. The updates will include pictures and information of the renovation as it progresses. Check back regularly. |
