Bronzed Boot
The bronzed boot, now part of Furman Rugby Club history, was an idea hatched by Michael Erickson, 09. Fresh from a trip to Barbados where he had represented Furman as member of the Ruby South men's all-star sevens team, Erickson recommended that the club hold a 7's intra- squad scrimmage during the late fall. The event would keep the team somewhat engaged during the off season.
Coach Roberts, Erickson and team captains Nick Kline '07 and Chris Tasich '07 ironed out details before Thanksgiving Break. Seniors would be selected captains for each team. A draft would be held. The Bronzed Boot tournament would be held on the Saturday following Study Day during the exams ? an nice, but short, break from drudgery of study.
With 30 participants the club held it first draft at Monterry's. Tasich, Scott Greenwood '07 and Drew Ferguson '07 were anointed captains.
Team Fellowship (Ferguson), Iron Balls (Greenwood) and Ahhhg (Tasich) booted up December 9. Fellowship defeated Ahhhg in the first match-up of the day but dropped the next game to a fresh Team Iron Balls. Iron Balls fell to Ahhhg in the final match-up.
With each team holding an identical 1-1 record, the winner was determined by points. The final standings:
Fellowship: 5
Ahhhg :4
Iron Balls: -11

Drew Ferguson, captain of the Fellowship, dashes for atry during the innaugeral game of the Bronzed Boot. Fellowship was victorious 20-17.
