encourage healthy lifestyles in order to prevent unnecessary disease and disability and to preserve and increase the quality of life among individuals in the University community and the Greenville region.
Additionally, the Furman Fitness Center will provide for the Furman University community and the community of Greenville a premier fitness and wellness facility that includes research-based wellness assessments, consultations, and programming in such matters as exercise, nutrition, and weight management.
The Furman Fitness Center staff collaborates with the academic departments on campus including Health and Exercise Science, Biology and Psychology in developing educational curriculum, research opportunities, and training opportunities for student interns at the Furman Fitness Center.
The Furman Fitness Center staff also collaborates fully with Student Life and Student Development and Continuing Education to incorporate all wellness related services in a central location.
The Furman Fitness Center provides an academic and research environment that will encourage scholars from the various wellness related disciplines to visit or become involved in fitness center projects.
Goals
The on-going goals of the Furman Fitness Center are to:
Develop a professional wellness program staff through full-time employees, university/community volunteers, university interns, and public and private organizations.
Provide programs that encourage regular exercise for improvement in general health and fitness for Furman students and employees and their families.
Provide an opportunity for students, employees and their families to become involved in a scientifically sound health and fitness enhancement program.
Provide guidance and supervision in the use of exercise and wellness programs as a form of therapy and rehabilitation for the symptomatic and disabled student and/or employee.
Provide continuous educational opportunities and pathways for Furman students, employees and program participants in regards to the wellness concept and methods towards enhancing individual family and community wellness.
Maintain a variety of program activities which are interesting, motivating, educational, and challenging.
Continually assess student and employee program satisfaction and wellness needs.
