What is the Physician’s Clearance form? Do I need one to become a member? The New Member Application includes a Physician’s Clearance form. For the safety of our members, everyone seeking membership at the PAC/FFC must have a physician sign the no contraindication statement.
No. While most fitness facilities charge an initiation fee and require a contract as a way of "helping" their members stay motivated or committed to regular exercise, we offer a flexibility of open-end month-to-month, pay-as-you-go membership.
What if I join in the middle of the month?
For new members who join after the fifth of the month, the current month´s fee may be prorated as long as the new member pays for the next month at the same time. If the member does not wish to pay for the next month, he/she may pay the full monthly fee for the remainder of the month. The Furman Fitness Center does not prorate for a particular month for new members or returning members. If a returning member comes to renew their membership, regardless of the date of the month, they must pay the entire monthly membership fee.
Community members are reminded that monthly memberships are to be renewed by the 1st of each month. We do not mail out invoices; the member may renew by paying the Fitness Center staff on duty. Members that have not renewed by the 1st of the month will need to do so prior to using the facilities. Membership is NOT pro-rated for renewing members.
Membership is available on a monthly (calendar) basis. For example, membership fees that are paid for on the 10th of the month, expire on the last day of that month; not the 10th of the following month.
Checks should be made out to "Furman University".
Although not required, our administrative office takes credit cards for membership payments. We can automatically charge your credit card on the 5th of each month for membership renewal.
You will need an ID card to access the PAC/FFC. There is a $20.00 charge to replace all lost IDs.
I’m a certified lifeguard. Can I swim when there is no lifeguard on duty?
No. There must be a PAC lifeguard on duty any time the pool is Open. Use of the pool when it is Closed is strictly prohibited. Pool hours are based on lifeguard availability and are posted weekly at www.furmanfitness.com as well as at the pool entrances.
What temperature is the pool water? Why?
The thermostat for the lap pool water temperature is set at 83-84 degrees Fahrenheit. While there is not one temperature that will satisfy all users, we feel that the current temperature is the most appropriate temperature given our wide range of users. Further, there are multiple factors that influence the temperature of the water and several of these factors are ones in which we have no control (i.e. ambient air temperature). Pool maintenance can also affect water temperature (i.e. backwashing, vacuuming and required weekly maintenance). With 100,000 gallons of water, the heater is not able to change the water temperature quickly (or even over night).
May I use the gym as part of my membership?
The gymnasium is a popular facility in the PAC and used throughout the day primarily by Furman students for class instruction and recreational sports. There is no set time or consistent schedule for use of the gym. A weekly schedule is posted on the website.
Although Fitness Center members may use the gym when it is available, that facility is NOT considered part of the membership package. Guest and day passes are only for use of the Furman Fitness Center and the Furman Aquatic Center. Guest or day passes are NOT available for use of the gym.
