The Furman Institute of Running and Scientific Training (FIRST) will begin a research study August, 2005, to determine the effects of a three-quality-runs-per-week training regimen on fitness and marathon performance. This follow-up study will continue FIRST's investigation of the training philosophy of achieving as much as possible on a minimum of run training. Results from FIRST's 2004 study on marathon training indicated that runners were able to run a successful marathon running only 3 days a week, following a specific training plan, and cross-training.
26 for 26
FIRST's 2005 research study will provide 26 runners with a marathon training program that provides specific distance and pace for an interval track workout, a tempo run, and a long run. Marathon program participants will also cross-train 2-3 additional days a week. All subjects will receive free laboratory assessments of maximal oxygen uptake, body composition, and lactate threshold, valued at $500, and an individually-tailored marathon training program.
Who's eligible to participate? For this study, FIRST is looking for runners of all ages who are currently completing long runs of at least 13 to 15 miles. The first week of the training program includes a 15 mile run.
How to become a subject? Interested runners should complete and submit a FIRST subject's application. The application is available at the FIRST website here. Subject selection will be determined by August 1st. Interested runners should submit their completed application (should be received by) no later than July 15th for consideration.
When is the training program? The FIRST marathon training program begins Aug. 15th and ends with the Kiawah Marathon on Dec. 10th.
When will subjects be tested? Subjects will complete the laboratory testing between August 22 - 27 and again after 15 weeks of training between November 28th and December 1st.
What's expected of subjects?
1. All research subjects will be expected to complete three prescribed run workouts per week on non-consecutive days. These running workouts will be designed specifically for the individual based on her or his fitness level. Participants may run only three days per week. Participants will need access to a 400m / 440 yard measured track.
2. Participants are expected to complete cardiorespiratory cross-training workouts (bike, row, step, EFX, swim, walk etc.) on the non-running days. Cross training workouts will be designed to maintain and improve cardiovascular/aerobic conditioning. Participants will need access to a fitness center (commercial fitness center or home fitness equipment).
3. Participants must keep records of their workouts and submit via e-mail weekly to the FIRST staff.
4. Participants will be expected to participate in some the FIRST marathon training group runs.
5. Attendance at a group meeting on either Sept. 25th or 26th and on either October 23rd or 24th is expected.
6. Due to the nature of the FIRST Marathon Training Program, road racing during the 16-week program will be limited to the Oktoberfest 10k in Walhalla on October 22nd.
7. Enter and run the Kiawah Island Marathon, December 10th. Marathon training program participants will be responsible for the marathon entry, lodging, travel, etc.
