Student Employment Office

The Student Employment  Office (SEO) is a member of the Division of Enrollment.  The SEO shares a suite with the Office of Career Services, and is located in Suite 210 of the Univeristy Center.

The Student Employment Office offers several programs to assist students with part-time and summer employment.  Incoming freshmen are counseled by the Director of Student Employment during orientation week as to the office's services.  All students receive a letter during the summer informing them of any changes in the policies and procedures of the SEO.

One of the primary functions of the SEO is to administer the Federal Work-Study Program.  The SEO also offers many other programs, which are described below:

Student Employee Training - the SEO purchased the Partners Student Employee Development Program several years ago.  The training takes about 1 1/2 hours to complete, and covers everything from telephone etiquette to time management.  All student workers are encouraged to participate in this training.

Supervisor Training - SEO holds Supervisor Training and Appreciation workshops for Furman Employees.  These workshops provide information and training in many areas, including hiring procedures and employment paperwork completion.

Federal Work-Study Program (FWS) - this federally funded program promotes employment to help students meet their educational expenses.  FWS eligibility is need based and is determined by the data on the student's FAFSA (finanacial aid application).  Eligible students can work on-campus or in approved non-profit organizations off-campus.

       a.  Community Service Program - this program is part of the FWS program, and
provides students with opportunities to work in the Greenville community in
various positions.  This program is only available to FWS students.

       b.  America Reads & America Counts Programs - these programs, another part
of the FWS program, provide opportunities for students to tutor families and
children in the Greenville area.  This program is only available to FWS students.

Campus-Based Work Program - this program is completely funded by Furman University.  The jobs available through this program have special requirements.  While students who are not eligible for FWS may work on-campus, it is the university's policy to offer FWS students first priority for all on-campus jobs.

Furman University Temporary Service - This program provides students access to temporary jobs on-campus.  Students sign-up for the temporary service in the SEO.

Summer Employment - The SEO maintains approximately 300 summer job files.  These files are available for student use year round, and include camps and businesses from Greenville and many other areas across the country.  The SEO also hosts a Summer Camp Fair each year, usually in mid-March, to asist students with their summer job search.

Job Location & Development (JLD) Program - this is a non-need based off-campus employment program open to all students.  Local businesses, agencies, and individuals post part-time and summer jobs with the SEO through this program.
