WELCOME to FURMAN UNIVERSITY FINANCIAL AID
Listed below are the steps you need to accomplish in order to apply for need-based financial aid, including student loans and work study. If you take the financial aid application process one step at a time, you should
find that it is not as complicated as you expect.
After your home, a college education may be the most significant financial investment you and your family will make. While this investment is daunting, the Office of Financial Aid at Furman will guide you through the steps necessary to finance this strategic investment. We all know it will involve sacrifice, but so does everything that is worth doing. The value of a Furman education is worth the effort. Upon acceptance, you will be able to see how much aid is offered, giving you the "net price," or out-of-pocket costs.
At Furman, you'll find a comprehensive program of financial assistance. We offer traditional sources of financial aid, as well as academic and special scholarships for students who will enrich the Furman community through their academic ability and special talents. Our own scholarships and grants, combined with federal and state assistance and wise financial planning, enable most students to enjoy the full benefits of Furman.

Financial Aid Renewal Information for Returning Students
Due to the nation's econcomic situation, we realize that students and parents are anxious to receive a financial aid award notice for the 2009-2010 year. Our normal procedure is to award returning students after spring term grades are posted. However, in an effort to assist you and your family earlier, award notices will be sent out prior to final grades being posted for spring term.
~ Please be aware that all academic scholarships require
students to maintain a certain cumulative GPA at the end
of the year.
~ Even though you may be eligible for renewal at the time you
receive your initial 2009-2010 award notice, the scholarship will
be canceled if you have not met the renewal requirement at the
end of the academic year.
~ If you are interested in receiving- or continuing to receive- need
based financial aid (federal/state grants, loans, work study),
you should complete the 2009-2010 Free Application for Federal
Student Aid (FAFSA).
~ The website for the FASFA is www.fafsa.ed.gov.
~ Other documents, when applicable, may be requested at a later
date.
~ The PLUS Loan, SC Teachers Loan and private alternative loans
do not require the FAFSA, but you must apply for them every
year.
~ Be sure to search for outside scholarship possibilities at
https://apps.collegeboard.com/cbsearch_ss/welcome.jsp.
Steps to apply for need-based financial aid at Furman for Incoming Students include:
1. Complete the CSS Profile ( Furman's code to receive the CSS Profile
results is 5222) NOTE: RETURNING STUDENTS NEED NOT
COMPLETE THE CSS PROFILE.
~ Completed online at profileonline.collegeboard.com
~ Early Decision (ED) admission applicants should complete
this form online by November 15th of your senior year in high
school (ED applicants must also complete the FAFSA within
the timeframe mentioned below).
~ Regular Decision admission applicants should complete this
form online by March 1st.
~ Furman uses the College Board's CSS Profile form to
determine demonstrated financial need for the university's
need-based grant program (Furman Grant). Because
Furman's institutional resources are limited, we must take
the best measure of a family's ability to pay into account in
awarding our own funds to students.
2. Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid - FAFSA
( Furman's code to receive the FAFSA results is 003434)
~ Complete online at www.fafsa.ed.gov
~ All applicants interested in federal and state grants, loans,
and work study must complete the FAFSA.
~ We suggest you complete the FAFSA between February 1st
and March 1st of your senior year in high school.
NOTE: South Carolina residents must complete the State Affidavit
annually to be considered for South Carolina Tuition Grants
or other aid that requires residency in South Carolina.

Outside Scholarships - Students are encouraged to research and apply for scholarships offered by various organizations, companies, and clubs. There are many resources to assist a student's search for scholarship funding. Once such resource is the College Board's free scholarship search engine at apps.collegeboard.com/cbsearch_ss/welcome.jsp.
