Frequently Asked Questions About the Federal Work-Study Program (FWS)

How do I know if I'm eligible for FWS?

To apply for the FWS program, you must complete the FAFSA each year in the Financial Aid Office.  Work-study is based upon a student's finanacial need, and will appear on your financial aid award notice if you are eligible.

What Does the Award Amount mean?

The FWS amount that appears on your financial aid award notice is an eligibility amount.   This amount will not be applied toward your tuition.  Rather, the "award" represents the amount of FWS funds you are allowed to earn during the year.

What types of FWS jobs are availalbe?

FWS eligible students can chose from a variety of jobs on and off-campus.  Available jobs include: clerical, tutoring, food service work, laboratory assistants, and many other positions.

How do I get a work-study job?

Work-study eligible students should contact the Student Employment Office on the day of enrollment to discuss available FWS jobs.

Note: Be sure that you bring your driver's license and social security card or birth certificate with you to school (a passpost is also acceptable, if available).  These forms of identification are necessary for completing work eligibility paperwork, and without them you cannot begin working.

How many hours per week will I work?

Most positions are 10 hours per week, but you can work up to 20 hours per week if you choose.

What are my responsibilities as an FWS Employee?

Though your employer knows your primary concern at the university is your studies, you must also be a responsible employee.  As such, you will be expected to perform to the best of your ability, be punctual, and be professional when at the work place.

How will I be Paid?

Students work on a biweekly schedule.  You will complete time cards and turn them in to your supervisor every two weeks.  You will be paid on alternating Fridays.  Students may choose to receive checks, which are mailed to their campus mailbox, or to have their checks directly deposited into their bank account.

What if a problem occurs between an employee and a supervisor?

Any problems that occur should be resolved between you and your supervisor if at all possible.  If such resolution is not possible or if the problem persists, the Director of Student Employment should be contacted.

Do I have to start work fall term?

Some students want to begin work as soon as they arrive at Furman, while other students want more time to adjust to college life before getting a job.  Whichever path you choose, the Student Employment Office will make every effort to help you find a job whenever you decide to work.  Be aware, however, that if you start working later in the year or work in a temporary position, you may not earn the full amount of your award.  You should also note that 90-95% of all on-campus jobs are filled fall term.

Furman University offers equal opportunity in its employment, admissions, and educational activities, in compliance with Title IX and other civil rights laws.
