What do we mean by Scholary projects in which both faculty and students are collaborative partners in examining, creating, and sharing new knowledge or works in ways consistent with practices in the discipline:

WHY should a student consider spending a summer working with a professor on research project? To immerse oneself into a research project results in not only learning more about the subject of study, but also further develops critical thinking skills by learning more about the research process and constructing solutions to problems. Students apply knowledge gained in the classroom to real situationsand learn to work both independently and with teams. These are skills and abilities that can be applied to all disciplines. This experience also helps students to clarify career paths and goals for graduate and professional education.
HOW does a student get involved in collaborative faculty-student research? Talk to professors in departments of interest. Opportunities are available in all areas of study. If you don't know which professors to approach, contact Marianne Pierce in the Office of Undergraduate Research and Internships (294.3067) and she can make recommendations to you. about mentoring students and facilitating the student research relationship. The Office also provides support for poster fairs, campus conferences, and other activities that showcase student research/creative activity and collects data on research participation throughout campus.
