"While in the lab I worked on a small project exploring the correlation between certain protein levels and lung function in premature babies. My project really put into perspective how much work there is to be done in that, and every other area of medical research.
The internship helped me realize the ongoing and ever-changing nature of medical research. It is something that will never be finished, and the more people committed to the field the better. However, I really do enjoy the patient interaction side of medicine too much to work in a lab fulltime.
I did work with several doctors who work part time in research and part time in the hospital, which could be a good balance, but I will probably end up solely on the clinical side of medicine. My dream is to be an emergency room doctor, and this summer confirmed that even more." |
