Alpha Kappa Delta Since 1982 the Sociology Department at Furman has been the home of the EPSILON chapter of Alpha Kappa Delta (AKD), the international sociology honor society. This organization is a non-secret, democratic, international society of scholars dedicated to the ideal of investigating humanity for the purpose of service. The goal of the organization is to promote an interest in the study of sociology, and the research of significant and lasting social problems--as well as other social activities as will lead to improvement in the human condition. Sociology majors who meet the following criteria will be invited to join AKD:
(Note: the cut-off for the top 35% varies from class to class, but is often in the range of a 3.4.) Future AKD activities will include an annual dinner of members and faculty, AKD- sponsored research colloquia, AKD-sponsored guest scholars, and departmental support for student research publication in Sociological Inquiry, the official journal of Alpha Kappa Delta. For further information about AKD, see Dr. Susan Munkres.
