This organization is a non-secret, democratic, international society of scholars dedicated to the ideal of investigating humanity for the purpose of service. The goal of the organization is to promote an interest in the study of sociology, and the research of significant and lasting social problems--as well as other social activities as will lead to improvement in the human condition. Sociology majors who meet the following criteria will be invited to join AKD: must be a sociology major or seriously involved with sociology must have completed four regular courses in sociology must be a junior must have at least a GPA. of 3.0 both overall and in sociology, and must rank in the top 35% of their class year (in GPA). (Note: the cut-off for the top 35% varies from class to class, but is often in the range of a 3.4.) Future AKD activities will include an annual dinner of members and faculty, AKD- sponsored research colloquia, AKD-sponsored guest scholars, and departmental support for student research publication in Sociological Inquiry, the official journal of Alpha Kappa Delta.
