Will Gyauch, Class of 2010
Hometown: Lexington, SC

"This summer I had the opportunity to intern and study with the Canadian Parliament in Ottawa. I worked with Earl Dreeshen, a Member of Parliament from Red Deer, Alberta. I not only assisted Mr. Dreeshen and his staff with their day to day activities, but I was also able to attend many functions, meetings, and events that would have otherwise been closed to the Canadian public, and certainly to an American college student. Throughout my time with his office I wrote letters to various ministers within parliament, conducted research on topics that applied to Mr. Dreeshen’s riding (a Canadian term for what we might consider congressional districts), and made sure that he had everything he needed to complete his duties. I was also able to meet both Prime Minister Stephen Harper (pictured left) as well as the Leader of the Opposition, Stephen Ignatieff. This opportunity has given me a great insight on political life in another country and was an experience that I will never forget."

Andrew Holliday, Class of 2011
Hometown: Travelers Rest, South Carolina

"When I entered Furman I was a bit unsure as to what I wanted to do after graduation. At first I along with a large number of other freshmen thought a career in medicine would be a good choice but after I interned with the local hospital I quickly changed my mind. I had always enjoyed politics and political discussions so my transition to a Political Science major was extremely natural. My interest in politics is at the national and state level so it is only fitting that this past summer I worked for Dr. Brent Nelsen’s campaign for State Superintendent of Education. While working for the campaign I traveled all over the state and have met with and talked to some of the highest ranked constitutional and legislative leaders in the state of South Carolina. If it were not for the engaging philosophy of Furman’s Political Science department I would not have been able to enjoy such an enriching experience. With the gentle prodding of several Political Science professors I have decided to pursue a career in Law and eventually I hope to serve South Carolinians as an attorney."
