Furman University
Model United Nations Team

I. Name
 

This organization shall be known as the Furman University Model United Nations Organization (FUMLTN)

II. Purpose
 

FUMUN is dedicated to educating and informing students of international issues through active participation and engaged learning. This shall be done by:

A. attending at least 2 conferences each year;
B. helping the political science department in its class simulations;
C. helping in establishing MUN programs in local area high schools;
D. hosting at least one conference each year in conjunction with Furman Model Government.
III. Membership
 

FUMUN is open to all students of Furman University. To be considered a member of FUMUN, one must

A. Pay dues as determined by the executive officers
One exception to this will be in the first year. Dues will be determined on an as needed basis for that year.

B. attend at least one half of the regularly scheduled meetings
C. participate in the research process for each conference
IV. Officers
  A. Officers are to be elected in the middle of spring term and will serve until the elections of the following year. The only exception to this policy will be with head delegates for individual conferences.
  B. Offices
   

1. President
Responsibilities

      i. Preside over meetings.
      ii. Serve as head delegate for group.
      iii. Make arrangements for conferences including:
        a. hotel
        b. country requests
        c. transportation
        d. meeting deadlines for conference arrangements
      iv. Help other officers in accomplishing their duties.
      v. Serve as the contact person for the organization in the Model UN community
      vi. Represent the organization in an official capacity at special events and activities.
   

2. Vice President of Conferences
Responsibilities

      i. Serve in President's role when he/she is absent. . .
      ii. Serve as the research coordinator of the organization. ...
      iii. Serve as historian for the organization.
      iv. Help President in making conference arrangements.
   

3. Vice President of Programs
Responsibilities

      i. Act as liaison between Model United Nations, Furman Model Government, and Model Organization of African Unity.
      ii. Coordinate efforts to increase Model United Nations activities in local area high schools.
      iii. Arrange coordination with simulations within the political science department.
   

4. Secretary
Responsibilities

      i. Record and publish minutes of the meetings. . .
      ii. Correspond with members the meeting times and places.
      iii. Work with the Vice President of Conferences on research efforts.
      iv. Keep records of official correspondence with conferences and other Model United Nations organizations.
      v. Keep record of country meeting reports.
      vi. Create and distribute all of publicity.
   

5. Treasurer
Responsibilities

      i. Submit budget to the Association of Furman Students when necessary. . .
      ii . Write grant proposals. ...
      iii. Collect dues.
      iv. Keep all members of the organization of its financial standing.
      v. Update all members of their financial standing with the organization.
   

6. Country Head Delegates
Responsibilities

      i. Serve as the country team's leader for that conference . .
      ii. Motivate fellow members of the country.
      iii. Head of individual country meeting.
      iv. Write meeting report.
      v. Serve as group coordinator at the conference.
    Selection
Unlike the other offices, the Head delegate for each country is selected on a conference by conference basis. The selection is done by an election held by the members of each country for each conference.
 

C. Officer Collective duties
With the faculty advisor(s), the executive officers shall decide

      i. what conferences to attend, . .
      ii. country selection ...
      iii. country and committee assignments
      iv. additional projects for the organization
      v. meeting time and place
      vi. research assignments
      vii. all other matters that cannot be settled in regular meetings.
  D. Miscellaneous issues
      i. All matters determined by the executive officers are subject to the approval of the members of FUMUN.
      ii. All matters are up for discussion during regular meetings. . . .
      iii. Any proposal rejected by the general membership must go to a committee comprised of the officers and six members selected by the general membership in order to establish a compromise.
        a. All proposals from this committee are subject to the approval of the general membership.
        b. Process is to be repeated until a suitable compromise is established.
V. Election Procedure
 

A. Time
Nominations for office are to be held in the first meeting of the organization in April. Elections are to be held in the following meeting.

  B. Nominations
      i. The chair of the elections meeting shall open the floor for nominations for each position before each is elected. . .
      ii. All nominations need to have a second before the name will be placed on the list of nominees.
      iii. The nominees must be present at the meeting to be considered for nomination.
      iv. One can be nominated to more than one office, but one can only be elected to one office.
  C. Elections
      i. Elections are to be chaired by one of the faculty advisors. . .
      ii. The order of officer elections shall follow the one outlined in the previous article of this constitution.
      iii. Absentee ballots must be cast and received by the faculty advisor 24 hours before the election is to take place.
      iv. To win the election, one must receive an absolute majority of the votes.
      v. There will be runoff elections, if necessary.
      vi. For head delegates, the election will take place at least 6 weeks prior to the conference, and the winner must receive the majority vote within his/her country.
VI. Meetings
  A. There shall be regularly scheduled meetings every 2 weeks on a day and time as selected by the officers and faculty advisor.
  B. Order
    1. Roll call
    2. Reading of minutes
    3. Faculty advisor remarks
    4. Officer reports
    5. Member reports
    6. Old business
    7. New business
    8. Final announcements
    9. Adjournment
  C. Country delegations shall meet as determined by those representing that country. These meetings shall produce a report to be submitted to the secretary.

VII. Amendments
Amendments to this constitution can be made with the 2/3 approval of members present at a meeting of the organization and is subject to the approval of the Association of Furman Students.
