The Furman University Model United Nations Organization represented Furman at the University of Pennsylvania Model United Nations Conference (UPMUNC 2005) on November 3-6, 2005 in Philadelphia, PA. As the conference, Furman students represented the nation of Honduras on various United Nation's committees such as the Committee on Disarmament and Security, the Special and Political Committee, and the Organization of American States. All of the delegates described the event as extremely enriching, providing them with the opportunity to gain knowledge about other countries around the world. The delegates acted as the respective representatives of Honduras to their various committees, covering topics such as the war on drugs in Colombia, the situation in Darfur, Sudan, child labor, human trafficking, among other issues. According to Leah Branch, one of Furman's representatives, " by participating in the simulations, we improved out public speaking skills and learned to communicate with other delegates. More importantly however, we learned to think outside of ourselves and see important issues from a global perspective."
