Planning Your Career
Senior Students
  1. Be sure you know the application deadlines for the schools to which you plan to apply. Since August MCAT scores are not mailed until October, it may be necessary to apply to certain schools before seeing your MCAT results. The earlier you apply, the earlier you interview and the better your chances.
  2. For AMCAS schools, interviews are usually requested after the supplementary application materials are sent to you. Interviews are usually arranged between September and March.
  3. Prepare for your interview by being well rested and well dressed. Be prepared to justify your choice of profession and to ask questions about the school you are visiting.
  4. Participate in the AED mock interview program to share your experiences with rising seniors.
  5. If your schedule permits, take advantage of the liberal arts tradition at Furman during your senior year. Take a few courses to broaden your background and avail yourself of concerts, speakers, etc. since you will have more time for this during your senior year than you will while a student at medical school.
  6. Consider the financial aspects of attending medical schools. Ask questions about financing a medical career when you go for interviews. Investigate the pros and cons of scholarship contracts with the Armed Forces, the Public Health System and your home state. Once a professional school has accepted you, the office of financial affairs will be in contact with you to work out a package for you if you should need financial assistance as most students do.
