Freshmen and Transfer Students
- Register your health career interests with the Chief Health Career Advisor. For freshmen this is usually done in a meeting on Wednesday of Freshman Orientation Week. If you did not register at that time, stop by the chief health professions advisor's office in room 224, Plyler Hall.
- The health career interest registry enables you to receive information about meetings of interest, notices of professional school recruiters' visits on campus, summer program opportunities, eligibility for membership in AED, etc. The registry also enables Furman to compile a profile of student interest in health careers and plan appropriate programs to meet student needs.
- Become an associate member of AED (the premedical honor society) for $10. This will put you on the mailing list for the local AED chapter's Newsletter which is issued 3 or more times a year, an invitation to the AED welcoming picnic, and membership in the health career buddy system and Catalyst program.
- Utilize the resources in the health career advisory office, in the library, and the World Wide Web to familiarize yourself with the health professions.
- Begin planning and implementing your volunteer program in the area of health you plan to make a career. Besides your Grade Point Average (GPA), and your scores on the Medical College Aptitude Test (MCAT) you must show that you have a passion for your chosen career. The best way that you can do this is by active involvement in a volunteer program. Both the Collegiate Educational Service Corps (CESC) and AED can help provide such opportunities.
- If you are planning on a 2 + 2 or dual degree program in allied Health, Pharmacy or Nursing, be sure to check the course requirements of the schools to which you plan to apply. This can be done by checking the World Wide Web site for the schools in which you are interested. You must register your intent to do a 2+2 or dual degree program with the Furman University Registrar as well as the Chief Health Careers Advisor.
- Be sure you complete English 11: Composition, Math 11: Pre-calculus, and three science courses in your freshmen year.
