The Major

(1) PHL 20: Introduction to Philosophy is a prerequisite for all other philosophy courses.

Students who complete the university humanities sequence, HUM 11, 12, and 13, will be considered as having satisfied the prerequisite and are not required to take PHL 20 before taking higher-level courses in philosophy.

(2) Two courses are required of all philosophy majors: PHL 31: Historical Foundations I and PHL 32: Historical Foundations II. The department recommends that majors take these courses as early in their career at Furman as possible.

(3) Students whose sole major is philosophy need to take at least five courses in addition to PHL 20, 31, and 32 for a total of eight courses. (Students who complete the humanities sequence and choose not to take PHL 20 will need to complete six courses in addition to PHL 31 and 32.)

(4) Students who choose to double-major in philosophy and some other discipline are required to take at least four courses in addition to PHL 20, 31, and 32 for a total of seven courses. (Double majors who complete the humanities sequence and choose not to take PHL 20 will need to complete five courses in addition to PHL 31 and 32.)

Students wishing to declare a major in philosophy should contact David Shaner, the chair of the philosophy department, at extension 3141.
