Furman Band and Orchestra Camp
Furman Band & Orchestra Camp
June 13 - 18, 2010
Attracting
talented young musicians from multiple states, this compact one-week camp offers
exceptional opportunities to perform in a variety of ensembles: a full symphony
orchestra, a string orchestra, two concert bands, a wind symphony,
a jazz ensemble and several chamber groups. The atmosphere for young musicians
is stimulating, combining as it does the challenge of performing with other
motivated musicians, the experience of daily rehearsals and the opportunity
for both individual and group instruction. In addition to performance instruction,
the camp offers classes in basic musicianship for all levels, optional private
lessons and daily recreational activities, all within the beautiful setting
of the Furman campus. The week will be a memorable experience of musicianship
and camaraderie.

Lessons...
Optional private lessons are available on your primary camp instrument for $25 per half hour. Lesson fees may be paid (to FURMAN UNIVERSITY) at time of registration or when confirmation paperwork is returned to us with balance of payment. (The confirmation paperwork will include a lesson request form at which time you will confirm the number of lessons wanted and list your repertoire.) Scholarship funds may be used for lesson fees. Limit of 2 half hour lessons. Lessons will be paid by Furman to the teacher. All fees due by May 1.
Auditions...
-
You have 5 minutes to show off your skills and let the auditioner know your interests (if advanced enough for orchestra, jazz ensemble or a chamber ensemble). Prepare a brief solo excerpt or etude no more than 2 minutes in length. Know the scales and key signatures appropriate for your grade level. They will ask you to sight-read a brief excerpt. Since you spend much of the first two days at camp sight-reading music in the ensembles, this is an important part of your placement testing.
-
Percussion - your audition takes a bit longer since you need to do the above solos on keyboard (scales) plus snare (rudiments) and timpani (tuning). If you only play one or two of those, no problem - that's why you come to music camp! Audition on the percussion areas in which you have experience. If you have never played timpani, you do not have to audition on timpani. Jazz drum set auditions are optional. If interested, come prepared to play a sampling of various set rhythms (swing, latin, funk).
- Theory Test (survey) - No stress. This is to place you in a musicianship class that best matches your skills and interests. On Sunday afternoon you will take your placement audition and this survey test between 2 and 5 pm.
