Thomas W. Joiner

Thomas Joiner has appeared as a conductor, violin soloist, chamber player, and teacher in over twenty states and ten foreign countries. As Professor of Violin and Orchestral Activities at Furman University in Greenville, South Carolina, he conducts the Furman Symphony Orchestra in orchestral, operatic, and oratorio performances each year. Since 1980 Joiner has served on the faculty of the Brevard Music Center where he holds the Dr. & Mrs. William J. Pendergrast, Sr. Artist Chair. He serves on the conducting faculty and is co-concertmaster of the Brevard Music Festival Orchestra. He has been Music Director and Conductor of the Hendersonville Symphony Orchestra (NC) since 1998. In the spring of 2001, Joiner spent a sabbatical in France studying with eminent maestro John Nelson, Music Director of the Ensemble Orchestral de Paris.

Joiner has performed in Carnegie Hall and the Kennedy Center as a principal player with the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra and has been a violinist with orchestras in Louisville, Aspen, Charleston, and Savannah. As an Artistic Ambassador for the United States Information Agency, he presented seventeen violin recitals with pianist Douglas Weeks during a 1996 five-week tour of western Africa and the Middle East. He has served as South Carolina President of the American String Teachers Association and as a national board member of the Conductors Guild.

Joiner was Professor of Violin and Director of Orchestral Activities at the University of Georgia School of Music for eleven years, returning to his alma mater, Furman University, in 1994. He earned the Doctor of Music in Violin Performance from Florida State University, the Masters of Church Music in Musicology from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, and the Bachelor of Music in Violin Performance from Furman University. His violin studies include work with Elaine Richey, Dan Boda, Guido Lamell, and Gerardo Ribeiro.
