THOMAS JOINER

Thomas Joiner, conductor and violinist, has appeared as a soloist, chamber player, conductor, and teacher in over twenty states and nine foreign countries. He has performed in Carnegie Hall and the Kennedy Center as a principal player with the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra and has been a member of orchestras in Louisville, Aspen, Charlotte, Charleston, and Savannah.

As a 1996 Artistic Ambassador for the United States Information Agency he presented seventeen violin recitals during a five-week tour of western Africa and the Middle East. He has collaborated with artists Tzimon Barto, Lee Luvisi, James Buswell, Carter Brey, William Preucil, Sarah Reese and Gary Lakes and Rhythm & Brass.

In 1994, Thomas returned to his alma mater, Furman University, as a Professor of Violin and Orchestral Studies. He is also a faculty member of the Brevard Music Center where he holds the Dr. & Mrs. William J. Pendergrast, Sr. Artist Chair, serves as Concertmaster of the Brevard Symphony Orchestra, and conducts the Transylvania Symphony Orchestra (NC)

He is on the Board of Directors of the Conductors Guild, Inc., and presently serves as President of the South Carolina Chapter of the American String Teachers Association.

Thomas earned the Doctor of Music from Florida State University, the Master of Church Music from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, and the Bachelor of Music from Furman University. For eleven years he was a Professor of Violin and Director of Orchestral Activities at the University of Georgia School of Music.

The Joiner DuoHe and his wife, violist Anna Barbrey, perform as the Joiner Duo throughout the southeast. In 1992 and 1994 they were Artists-in-Residence at the Universidade do Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, and performed with the Orquestra da Camera Theatre Sao Pedro. In 1997 the Joiners presented their New York debut recital on the concert series of the Donnell Library. Thomas recently spent a sabbatical in Paris working with maestro John Nelson, Music Director of the L'Ensemble Orchestral de Paris. Read the review of their CD: Intermezzo.
