Audition Weekends
...for students seeking music scholarship consideration: majors, non-majors or undecided
The Furman Music Department requires auditions for students who wish to begin study in a music major track or wish consideration for music scholarship support (majors and nonmajors). Auditions are held during an applicant's senior year in high school or the year prior to entry for transfer students. Students seeking entry to Furman may audition for scholarship consideration before the university application process is complete, but music decisions are not announced until the applicant is invited to attend Furman. The specially planned Audition Weekends, Friday evening - Saturday afternoon, offer you and your parents the opportunity to attend a major performance, talk with music faculty and students, take a campus tour, and talk with Financial Aid. the required part of the weekend will be your performance audition with interview and music theory / music aptitude evaluations. (Theory and Compositoin applicants should prepare and submit a portfolio of works - a theory/comp interview will be scheduled for you.) Saturday is the preferred day. Special requests for Friday afternoon auditions will be considered on a case-by-case basis. Due to the unrehearsed portion of the audition, live auditions are preferred and given preference in deliberations, but, if distance or unavoidable conflict does not permit you to travel to Furman during one of the designated weekends, please submit a CD or DVD by the audition date. Complete and enclose the application form with your recording. Recordings and live auditions should fulfill the criteria listed below. MAJORS: SCHEDULING of MUSIC CLASSES (which takes place in June) will NOT BE PERMITTED until an audition is heard by the faculty and approval given to enroll and begin music study.
For scholarship consideration, both majors and non-majors are welcome to apply since a limited number of non-major participation scholarships are awarded yearly based on department need. Students desiring to study and perform on more than one instrument may audition on two instruments. (Example: voice and piano) Please submit separate application forms for each - see pdf link below. Accompanists: Instrumental auditions do not require an accompanist. Vocal auditions require an accompanist supplied by either the applicant or, with advance request, by Furman. The use of recorded accompaniments is not appropriate. |
