Ensembles, Lessons, Theory Placement

Welcome Freshmen!  The information below will be updated throughout the spring and summer as details become available.

Performing Ensembles
All Furman students with musical skill - welcome! Visit the Areas of Study web pages to read about the various ensembles.  Music majors and music scholarship recipients who have already auditioned will be assigned and scheduled based on that audition - you will receive detailed instructions at the time of registration. Non-majors are welcome to audition Sunday afternoon, August 24 (Orientation Weekend).   If you are considering a major in music and have not auditioned for the faculty, please email furmanmusic@furman.edu (864-294-2118) for instructions.  

  • Bands:  Woodwinds, Brass, Percussion
    • The Paladin Marching Regiment begins rehearsals prior to Orientation Weekend, so early interaction with the directors is essential.  APPLY HERE
    • Other bands: Specific details for Fall 2008 will be posted here once they become available.
  • Choral Ensembles
    • Make-Up Auditions: SUNDAY afternoon, AUGUST 24, 2008     Times TBA

  • Furman Symphony Orchestra

 Private Lessons
Music majors and music scholarship recipients who have already auditioned will be assigned and scheduled based on that audition - you will receive detailed instructions at the time of registration. Non-majors are welcome to audition and will be accepted on a space-available basis.   If you are considering a major in music and have not auditioned for the faculty, please email furmanmusic@furman.edu (864-294-2118) for instructions. 

  • Make-Up Auditions: SUNDAY afternoon, AUGUST 24, 2008     Times TBA
  • What to Prepare: 
    • Strings, Woodwinds, Brass: Prepare a solo of your choice (or two brief etudes of contrasting styles).  No piano accompaniment needed.
    • Percussion:  Prepare a solo excerpt or etude of your choice on snare, timpani and keyboard percussion. Demonstration of your drum set and world percussion experience is optional.
    • Voice: Prepare a solo of your choice. If available, please bring a copy of the piano accompaniment for the staff accompanist.
    • Piano, Organ: Prepare a solo of your choice.  Pianists may request to study organ without prior organ experience.

Music Theory Courses
Freshmen and Transfers

  • Placement tests in music theory, aural skills and keyboard skills have already been completed. Results of those tests will be utilized during the registration process to schedule you in the appropriate course levels or to offer an exemption option.  You will receive more details during the registration process.
  • Missed the tests? If you are considering music as a major and believe you may be eligible for advanced placement or exemption, plan to take the theory make-up test on SUNDAY afternoon, AUGUST 24, 2008
